3 talking points as Rangers too much for Hibs but victory soured by Leon Balogun injury

Alfredo Morelos was the match-clincher with his 16 th goal of the season but James Tavernier was the key to a crucial win for Rangers.

The Ibrox captain once again showed his quality from 12 yards when he smashed a fourth minute penalty.

And it was Tavernier’s delightful pass forward in 57 minutes that set up Morelos who thumped a right foot shot over Hibs keeper Matt Macey.

The statistics are so impressive – seven goals and 14 assists – as the skipper showed his undoubted quality to this group of players.

It should have been a lot more comfortable for Rangers but the win was all that mattered as they sought to remain in touch with Celtic who have retained their one-point lead.

Morelos was guilty of passing up decent opportunities while Scott Arfield could have netted early after being set up by, guess who, Tavernier.

And Ryan Kent, who was brought down by Paul McGinn for the fourth minute penalty, might also have had a couple.

The one down side for Rangers was Leon Balogun limping out of the game after just 13 minutes with what looks like a hamstring injury.

Here are three talking points from Ibrox.

Goldson double century

Connor Goldson may be viewed as a contract rebel by some Rangers fans but his contribution to the team has been exceptional.

That’s 200 games now for the big centre back which is a significant milestone – but will he be around for the next landmark?

With John Souttar arriving in the summer Rangers have a replacement if the 29-year-old does leave at the end of his contract – but Gio van Bronckhorst must surely want to keep him.

Goldson’s consistency is remarkable as he has scarcely missed a match since he joined Rangers from Brighton in the summer of 2018.

Incredibly, he has onlyfailed to feature in 11 of the 211 matches Rangers have played since he signed and it was another assured and accomplished performance.

The one blemish was a yellow card but it mattered little on an important night for Rangers.

Balogun blow

Even although Filip Helander might well make his comeback on the synthetic surface at Annan on Saturday evening, he is not included in their UEFA squad for next week’s clash with Borussia Dortmund.

And that might prove to be costly mistake as Leon Balogun now looks like facing another spell out of action.

The big defender came on to good effect at Celtic Park last week and then shone in the 5-0 win over Hearts.

But he left the filed holding his left hamstring and that's not a good sign.

Gio van Bronckhorst will now have to revert to Calvin Bassey as one of his centre backs and while he is a willing participant, he is far more comfortable on the left side.

Misery for Maloney

Hibs are now on a run of seven straight defeats at Ibrox but the alarm bells are now ringing at the overall winless run of new manager Shaun Maloney.

The former Celtic and Scotland man, who replaced Jack Ross, started well with two league victories, but it’s now six games without a win, collecting just two points out of 15.

It’s a difficult run for the new manager who now faces a highly dangerous Scottish Cup tie at fairytale Championship leaders Arbroath.

It seems unthinkable that the young boss should be in jeopardy so early in his managerial career at Easter Road.

But they are now down to eighth and there are grumblings among some supporters.

Maloney needs victories and fast to turn things around because what looked like a bold and refreshing appointment has yet to bear fruit.
