3 Rangers talkers after narrow pre-season defeat to Tottenham

3 Rangers talkers after narrow pre-season defeat to Tottenham

New signings link-up

RANGERS fielded a new-look front four at Ibrox with Antonio Colak up-front and supported by new signings Tom Lawrence and Rabbi Matondo.

Ryan Kent was the only player from last season to make up the attacking quartet this afternoon.

Despite not having played together for very long, there were obvious flashes of clever link-up play between the attacking threats.

Matondo's electric pace proved a major danger on the wing with Colak competing for everything in the final third and Lawrence offering some guile in advanced positions.

Kent offered his expected trickery and pace too only adding to an encouraging showing from the forwards.

Colak did well in a quieter match than he might expect in Scottish football with Spurs putting in a decent shift. The striker will have been pleased to find the net, even if only in a friendly.

Elite opposition offer useful defensive test

There's no denying Tottenham - under Antonio Conte - look to be transitioning into an elite side.

Harry Kane and Heung Min Son are among the top strikers on the planet with the former showing his quality with two super strikes in the second half.

While for much of the match Rangers were more than an equal opposition for Spurs, playing a side of such quality will only help the Ibrox side.

Being put under defensive pressure will highlight any areas to work on for Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his side.

That said, Kane was marshalled expertly in the first period, but punished Rangers when he was afforded sight of goal.

Rangers depth shown in squad

While focus may have been on Lawrence, Matondo, Colak and John Souttar at Ibrox - a look at the team sheet demonstrated the depth being built in the Rangers squad.

It was a strong starting line-up for Rangers even with Ryan Jack, Steven Davis, Malik Tillman, Scott Wright, Scott Arfield and Fashion Sakala on the bench.

That's not even mentioning Ben Davies who has joined form Liverpool or Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe out through injury.

Van Bronckhorst already looks to have added wisely to his options for the upcoming season with Ridvan Yilmaz also expected to complete a move to Ibrox.
