3 people, including Virginia Beach police officer, injured in shooting at shopping center

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Virginia Beach Police Department is investigating a shooting involving a police officer and two civilians Thursday afternoon in the parking lot of a shopping center on Newtown Road.

The shooting was reported around 3:30 p.m. in the 600 block of Newtown Road, where several shopping centers are located.

Deputy Chief Sean Adams said an officer and two individuals were treated for injuries following a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle in which guns were drawn by both parties.

Adams said the two occupants of the vehicle were armed and there was a struggle. The officer was treated at the scene and released. The two people who were in the car were transported to a hospital for their injuries. Police had no word on their conditions.

There was a heavy police presence at the Newtown Baker Crossing Thursday evening as officials worked to investigate. Much of the parking lot was blocked off with police tape.

The center of the investigation appeared to be a vehicle parked in front of a row of shops toward the end of the shopping center.
