Preliminary reports suggested that one aircraft fell in Morena in Madhya Pradesh and other reportedly went down in the general area around Bharatpur, the sources said.
The Su-30 was carrying two pilots and the Mirage jet had one on takeoff. The status of the pilot remains unknown.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is in touch with CDS Gen Anil Chauhan and IAF chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari. The minister has sought details of the crash.
Additionally, The Indian Air Force has also begun the probe to find out whether there was any mid-air collision. The Su-30 had two pilots while Mirage 2000 had one pilot during the crash. Initial reports have suggested that two pilots are safe, ANI news agency reported.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Twitter directed the local administration to assist the IAF in the relief and rescue operation. CM Chouhan wrote, “I have instructed the local administration to cooperate with the Air Force in quick rescue and relief work. I pray to God that the pilots of the planes are safe".
The crash is the latest in a string of aviation accidents involving country's military air fleet.
Five army soldiers were killed last October when their helicopter crashed in Arunachal Pradesh. It was the second military chopper crash in the state that month, coming weeks after a Cheetah helicopter came down near the town of Tawang, killing its pilot.
India's defence chief, General Bipin Rawat, was among 13 people killed when his Russian-made Mi-17 helicopter crashed while transporting him to an air force base in December 2021.
