£2m Amazon electric vans in Glasgow unused for weeks 'because there's not enough chargers'

Dozens of electric Amazon vans costing around £2million have been left unused after suppliers failed to fit enough charging points at a huge distribution site, it's claimed.

The fleet of around 50 vehicles, used to ferry parcels to customers, were lined up outside a depot in Baillieston.

It is understood the vans arrived from another Amazon site but were left idle due to a lack of charging facilities at the site.

Workers were seen lifting the hoods on some vehicles as they tried to get them moving.

The LDV V80 vehicles are all powered by electric batteries and are made in China. They can operate for 120 miles on a single charge and cost around £50,000.

They were bought as part of Amazon trying to become net zero by 2040.

An Amazon insider said: "There have been delays in a supplier providing the charging capacity needed at the Ballieston site.

"The electric vehicles currently stored on site are not unusable."

A source said the vehicles had not moved for several weeks.

The source added: "These vans arrived in Baillieston from another depot, but haven't moved an inch.

"The batteries in them hadn't been charged up meaning they are now unusable until they get more chargers installed so all of the Amazon Prime labelled vans are lined up at the depot.

"It just seems like a huge waste of money to have a whole fleet sitting idle and not on the road especially given how busy Amazon seems to be.

"The vans have been there for about two months and it's a bit of a talking point."

Amazon is the largest private parcel courier in the UK, delivering 15 percent of the estimated 5.4 billion packages in 2021 which is the equivalent of more than two million items every day.

Items range from Prime next-day deliveries to packages shipped from thousands of miles away in China or India and it employs a team of thousands of drivers to meet demand.

The global giant posted UK sales of £20.63billion in sales in 2020 and employs around 55,000 people.

A spokesman for Amazon said: "Amazon now has more than 1,000 electric delivery vans on the road in the UK, and last year we delivered more than 45 million packages by more sustainable transportation methods, such as electric vans or cargo bikes.

"We are committed to becoming net-zero carbon by 2040, and customers will see more zero emissions vehicles hitting the roads as we expand our fleet."
