£2m active travel route planned from new Bridgend employment site

Work to develop a new active travel route in Bridgend has begun this month, linking the area of Waterton to a new employment site at Brocastle. The £2m route, which is being funded by Welsh Government, runs parallel with the A48 for about two kilometres and includes a cycleway, signalised road crossings and traffic signals, as well as new street lighting and kerbing.

The work, which is expected to be complete by early autumn, will mark the completion of the wider infrastructure works at the Brocastle site where £10m has been invested into transforming 116 acres of land into a new employment site. Planning consent has also been provided for up to 770,000 square feet of floor space, and is intended to help economic growth and job creation in the area, with the Brocastle site being marketed to attract fresh investment from modern businesses.

Welsh Government has confirmed that discussions are already taking place for a number of offers there, with councillor John Spanswick, cabinet member for communities, saying it was an exciting opportunity for the borough. He said: "The recent impact of rising fuel costs serves to underline both the increasing need to find new ways of making short journeys and the growing importance of active travel routes.

"The Brocastle development site offers an exciting opportunity to attract new businesses into the area so that it can benefit from fresh investment and employment, and I am sure that the new route will play a valuable role in this process. I am delighted to see that work on the new route has started, and I am looking forward to its completion later in the year."
