Authorities in Los Angeles have reported that approximately 29 individuals have been arrested in connection to criminal activities related to the ongoing wildfires. Among those arrested, a burglary suspect was apprehended for attempting to disguise himself as a firefighter. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna mentioned that 25 arrests were made in the area of the Eaton Fire, with an additional four individuals arrested in the Palisades Fire evacuated zone.
Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell highlighted that one person was arrested for violating a curfew order, while three others were apprehended for an alleged burglary. McDonnell emphasized the importance of enforcing the curfew to maintain security in the burn areas and evacuated properties, preventing looters from taking advantage of the situation.
McDonnell also warned about the dangers posed by downed power lines and toxic materials resulting from the wildfires. He advised caution when donating to victims and urged individuals to verify the legitimacy of charities before contributing.
Sheriff Luna issued a stern warning to scammers looking to profit from the wildfires, stating that local, state, and federal prosecutors are prepared to prosecute anyone taking advantage of residents during this challenging time.
Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger extended an invitation to President-elect Trump to visit the wildfire devastation, emphasizing the need for support and highlighting the resilience of impacted communities. Barger and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass confirmed ongoing communication with high-level officials in the incoming administration, dispelling any suggestions of animosity.
