Authorities in Los Angeles have reported that approximately 29 individuals have been arrested in connection to criminal activities related to the ongoing wildfires in the area. Among those arrested, a burglary suspect was apprehended for attempting to disguise himself as a firefighter, highlighting the challenges faced by law enforcement during this crisis.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna disclosed that 25 arrests were made in the vicinity of the Eaton Fire, with an additional four individuals apprehended from the Palisades Fire evacuated zone. The incidents underscore the need for heightened vigilance in fire-affected areas to prevent further criminal acts.
Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonald detailed that arrests included violations such as breaking curfew orders and alleged burglaries. One individual was caught impersonating a firefighter, emphasizing the lengths some individuals will go to exploit the victims of the wildfires.
Chief McDonald reiterated the importance of enforcing the curfew to maintain security in evacuated properties and prevent looting. He also warned of hazards such as downed power lines and toxic materials, urging caution when donating to wildfire victims and verifying the legitimacy of charities.
Sheriff Luna issued a stern warning to potential scammers looking to profit from the wildfires, emphasizing close collaboration with prosecutors at various levels of government to prosecute any individuals taking advantage of the situation.
During a press conference, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger extended an invitation to President-elect Trump to visit the wildfire-devastated areas.
