Much has been made of Newcastle United's £200m transfer spend since Eddie Howe arrived at the club. For every fan praising the job he has done on Tyneside, there is another lined up to try and belittle those achievements with the lazy accusation of his net spend.
However, Chelsea's current predicament is perfect proof that sometimes money really can't buy you happiness. The Blues unloaded £275m on seven new players over the summer, shortly before sacking the manager who signed them all.
Graham Potter deserves time, of course, but his Chelsea experiment isn't working to date. The visitors looked a team totally devoid of ideas at St James' Park on Saturday evening as they struggled to get going until the closing stages of the game.

18-year-old novice Lewis Hall was given his full Premier League debut at left-back. While Cesar Azpilicueta, Conor Gallagher and Trevor Chalobah all had spells at right-back during the game due to Potter's in-play tinkering.
If Potter doesn't turn things round he will be remembered for taking a team that finished third in the Premier League and turning them into a mediocre mid-table outfit - despite their embarrassment of riches and lavish summer spending.
The struggles of the west London side just reaffirm that while Howe may have spent a fair bit on players in both January and the summer, Newcastle are flourishing due to smart investments and his hard work on the training pitch.
The nine players Newcastle have brought in have all done their job to date and the money has been spent incredibly wisely. Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman and Bruno Guimaraes all look like bargains buys less than a year into their time on Tyneside.
Yet, as has been the case so often in recent weeks, the stand out men during the 1-0 Chelsea win were players Howe inherited. Fabian Schar again at his brilliant best in defence, while Willock looks to be the latest player in line to experience the Howe career-revival treatment.
It will be interesting to see if Chelsea's significant summer spending comes under as much scrutiny as Newcastle's should the former Premier League champions continue to struggle under Potter and his ever-changing formations.
