A Hoppers Crossing woman has tragically been killed in a house fire in Melbourne, with police investigating the incident as a “targeted attack”.
At about 2.30am on Thursday, January 16, emergency services were alerted to a fire at an address on Dover Street, Truganina.
A 27-year-old woman, who police have confirmed was house-sitting for her brother while he was on his honeymoon, died at the scene and the three-storey townhouse was completely destroyed by the blaze.
Police have confirmed that the woman was able to call firefighters shortly after an explosion from the fire erupted, but unfortunately, she couldn’t be saved.
Arson and Explosives Squad Detective Inspector Arson Chris Murray told reporters two alleged perpetrators parked outside of the address in a small dark colour SUV or hatchback before jumping the fence and setting the house on fire before fleeing.
“We know two occupants got out of that vehicle. Some accelerant was poured inside the house and subsequently engulfed the premises,” he said, per the Herald Sun.
“Whether they meant to damage these premises or just cause a scare tactic… now they are staring at a charge of homicide, of murder.
“We’re looking for two murderers. Let’s be clear about that.”
Murray also confirmed that the woman was “completely innocent” and “should not have died”.
“We have no history on this individual nor the family. In fact, she is the type of girl who doesn’t leave home very much, and it was probably her first time really away and by herself, house-sitting for her brother,” Murray told reporters.
“He’s on a honeymoon, and she’s been subjected to the most appalling, despicable act one can imagine.”
Police to investigate if the Truganina fire was a case of “mistaken identity”
As authorities search for the alleged suspects, detectives are also attempting to piece together why the home was targeted but have been unable to establish any reason behind the attack.
“Investigators are looking to see who may live in the area of the fire and the potential for this to have been a case of mistaken identity,” police said.
Inspector Murray couldn’t confirm if the suspects were harmed in the blaze but asked the public to remain vigilant of anyone with burns.
“If they’ve gone to a hospital or doctors, if someone’s seen someone come home who’s had a burn, that’s something we’d like to hear about again through Crime Stoppers,” he said.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.
