'The Remarkable Life of Ibelin' 

Mats Steen was a Norwegian man who lived with Duchenne muscular dystrophy but found freedom and connection in the virtual world of "World of Warcraft". Through his avatar Ibelin, Steen forged meaningful friendships and became a cherished member of an online community, all while his family believed his condition had left him socially isolated. After his death in 2014 at age 25, his parents discovered the profound impact their son had made on people across the globe when his online friends reached out to share their grief. Director Benjamin Ree's documentary weaves together interviews with Mats' friends in "World of Warcraft" as well as family footage to tell the story of this remarkable gamer as well as all the lives he touched.

'Hell Camp: Teen Nightmare' 

This harrowing look into the disturbing world of troubled teen programs run by Steve Cartisano is a hard but necessary watch. It focuses on Cartisano's "Challenger Wilderness Therapy Programme," which subjected teens to a grueling 63-day, 500-mile hike through the deserts of Utah. Parents, desperate to help their children, sent them to the program, unaware of the horrors awaiting them. Those forced to attend allegedly experienced physical and emotional abuse at the hands of those meant to help them. Paris Hilton, a survivor of similar programs, shares her own experiences in the film as it sheds light on the systemic issues within the troubled teen industry.

'Crip Camp'

This Oscar-nominated documentary sheds light on the disability rights movement in the United States through the lens of New York's Camp Jened in the early 1970s. It uses footage from co-director James LeBrecht's time at the summer camp. Camp Jened served as a sanctuary for people with disabilities, providing them with a supportive and empowering environment, and this documentary introduces a number of other of other cameras like LeBrecht during its runtime. 

The other campers discuss how their time at Jened inspired them to become activists in the fight for disability rights. The documentary shines a light on the personal stories and struggles of those who lived through a summer at "Crip Camp" as well as the lasting impact these individuals had on advocacy for disabled persons' rights over the years.

'Virunga'

Journey through the Democratic Republic of Congo's Virunga National Park in this nature documentary. Initially, filmmaker Orlando von Einsiedel set out to record the efforts of park workers to protect the endangered gorillas at the park. But things took a dramatic turn when the M23 military group staged a rebellion in the region. 

With a change in plans, the film now explores the far-reaching impact of the rebellion on the park and its inhabitants. In addition to the military conflict, the film also delves into the actions of a British oil company that seeks to drill in the area, posing a significant threat to the park's delicate ecosystem. Anyone with a tender heart for wildlife should take a look, but it's definitely not for the faint of heart.
