26-year-old pedestrian airlifted to hospital after horror crash on M8

A 26-year-old pedestrian was airlifted to hospital on Monday with “life-threatening injuries” after being involved in a crash with two vans on the M8.

A stretch of the motorway was closed for five hours on Monday night after the horror crash.

The pedestrian was taken by air ambulance to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow with life-threatening injuries.

Road Policing officers are now appealing for information following the accident on the M8 westbound at Harthill.

The incident happened around 4.05pm near Harthill Services and caused long tailbacks on the motorway.

The crash involved a grey Renault Traffic SL28 van, a Volkswagen Crafter van and a 26-year-old male pedestrian.

The road was closed westbound for around five hours to allow a full collision investigation to take place and reopened at 9.35pm.

A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and released pending further enquiries.

Sergeant Scott Sutherland, of Motherwell’s Road Policing Unit, said: “Our enquiries to establish the full circumstances of the crash are ongoing and I would urge anyone who may be able to help to get in touch.

“We would be especially keen to hear from anyone who may have dash-cam footage of the incident.

“Anyone with information or footage can contact officers on 101, quoting incident number 2210 of 17 October, 2022.

“I’d also like to thank the motorists who were affected by the road closure for their patience while we carried out our investigation.”
