Here in Wales, the use of names we use for each other are as vibrant as our culture. Drive just 10 miles from where you live and you'll go from being "spa" to "charl". Here are some of those special names that are so unique to Wales, their meaning and when you could possibly use them.

1. Butt / Butty
From: South Wales
What does it mean? Mate, bud or buddy
Example: "Iechyd da, butt!"
2. Bwy
From: Carmarthenshire, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot (roughly)
What does it mean? It's a different way of saying 'boy'
Example: "Give me that ball, bwy!"
3. Mush
From: Swansea
What does it mean? Means 'my good friend' in Romany from when the Romani gypsies came to Wales
Example: "Oi mush, what are you looking at?"
4. Jarj
From: Merthyr Tydfil
What does it mean? A general greeting
Example: "Oh jarj, did you model at one of Julien Macdonald's fashion shows in Rhydycar?"
5. Fella
From: Everywhere
What does it mean? A man
Example: "What do you think, fella? Is Wales going to win this year's Six Nations?"
6. Ffaro
From: Ceredigion
What does it mean? Commonly used term to greet someone
Example: "Listen here now, Ffaro, Wales is definitely going to win this year's Six Nations!"
7. Beaut
From: South Wales
What does it mean? Similar to 'butt'
Example: "Hey beaut, have you heard Goldie Lookin' Chains new song?"
8. Clart
From: Newport
What does it mean? Someone from Newport
Example: "That's a wicked chain you've got there, clart!"
9. Charl
From: Cardiff
What does it mean? Mate or friend
Example: "No, charl, it's not Cardiff Bay. It's Grangetown and always will be!"
10. Bay
From: Around south Wales
What does it mean? Similar to 'bwy'
Example: "I can't lie bay, Swansea Bay Beach is a lovely place."
11. Mun
From: South Wales
What does it mean? A man
Example: "I'm only sayin' mun!"
12. Jack
From: Swansea
What does it mean? Someone from Swansea
Example: "Yes - I am a Jack, and so is Catherine Zeta Jones!"
13. Cardi
From: Ceredigion
What does it mean? The term 'cardi' is pretty much self-explanatory as it comes from Cardigan or Cardiganshire
Example: "I am Cardi born and bred and no you cannot borrow a tenner."
14. Hwntw
From: North Wales
What does it mean? People from south Wales
Example: "I wish I was a Gog and not a Hwntw."
15. Gog
From: South Wales
What does it mean? People from north Wales
Example: "Not only is he a superb actor, but he's a Gog as well!"
16. Spa
From: Newport
What does it mean? A friend
Example: "I've told you a thousand times, spa, you can't go up the transporter bridge without permission!"
17. Washi
From: Gwynedd
What does it mean? Young man or lad
Example: "Listen here washi, C'mon Midffild is the best TV show ever."
18. Turks
From: Llanelli
What does it mean? Turks could derive from 'Turkish'.
Example: "You only call us turks because you're jealous of our historic success on the rugby field."
19. Wa
From: Bala
What does it mean? Friend or mate
Example: "Su' mae'i wa?" / "How's it going wa?"
20. Laa
From: Bangor
What does it mean? Lad
Example: "You going to Cube tonight, laa?"
21. C*nt (...with an 'o' not a 'u')
From: Caernarfon
What does it mean? Surprisingly this is not offensive and is often considered a term of endearment
Example: "Iawn, c*nt? Orite, c*nt?"
22. Dol
From: Holyhead
What does it mean? A doll
Example: "I'm catching the ferry from Holyhead to Dublin, dol."
23. Boi
From: Gwynedd
What does it mean? A Welsh version of 'boy'
Example: "Iawn, boi? Orite, boi?"
24. Cofi
From: Everywhere
What does it mean? Someone from Caernarfon
Example: "Cofi dre" / "I am from the town of Caernarfon"
25. Ngwasi
From: Across north Wales
What does it mean? This word is more endearing than 'washi', comes from the word 'gwas' meaning servant
Example: "Tyd yma, fy ngwasi!" / "Come here, ngwasi!"
26. Moider / Moiderer
From: Bangor
What does it mean? To either talk rubbish, to go on and on about something, or have a good 'moider' or chat with someone
Example: "He's a right moiderer, isn't he?"
