A 21-year-old man has been charged with the alleged murder of his mother in Western Australia.
On Friday, 29 November, at about 6.25pm, emergency services were called to a residence on Melbourne Street following reports of a serious assault.
When authorities arrived, a woman aged in her 40s was found inside the address with serious injuries.
Although paramedics treated the woman at the scene, she died as a result of her injuries.
Soon after, a man — who 9News reports is understood to be the woman’s son — was arrested at the scene and has been charged with murder.
According to the publication, neighbours claim they saw the man walk up the street to his mother’s house holding a weapon. The woman leaves behind a partner and six children.
The woman’s death comes on the sixth day of “16 Days in WA”, a local campaign that “takes its inspiration from the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.”
“16 Days in WA” runs from the 25th of November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to the 10th of December (Human Rights Day).
24 hours prior to the alleged murder, Geraldton marched through the town centre to raise awareness and stand in solidarity against violence.
Police are urging anyone who was in the vicinity of Melbourne Street and surrounding areas at the time of this incident, or anyone with any information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.
