£20k paid into Blantyre mum's bank account in bid to 'clean up' dirty money

More than £20,000 was paid into a single Lanarkshire mother's bank accounts in a bid to "clean up" dirty money.

Lynne MacDonald told police officers she was threatened with violence if she didn't co-operate.

Inquiries revealed she converted four-figure sums to euros and US dollars before she was caught.

MacDonald, 34, of Waverley Terrace, Blantyre, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

She admitted eight charges under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

MacDonald was arrested after police investigated an online fraud in 2018.

The court heard there was no suggestion that she had been involved in the crime itself, but she had helped "clean up" the cash proceeds.

Payments of £7,900, £5,800, £3,975 and £2,650 were made to various bank accounts held by MacDonald.

Some of this she converted to foreign currency and on one occasion she withdrew £4,500 from a bank branch in Glasgow.

MacDonald admitted her role when quizzed by police officers. She claimed that she had acted under instructions from a man called Cammie and was threatened with violence if she did not co-operate.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said the mum of three was exploited by criminals because she was "vulnerable".

He told the court: "There is a suggestion of wilful blindness on her part. It should have been obvious that something inappropriate was going on.

"She didn't profit in any way. She was told she would get something at the end of it all, but that didn't transpire. She was taken advantage of."

Sheriff Linda Nicolson said it was a "very serious" matter and MacDonald had "walked into it willingly".

However, she had no previous convictions and a non-custodial sentence was "appropriate".

MacDonald was ordered to carry out 162 hours of unpaid community work.

She was also electronically tagged for 15 weeks, meaning she's confined to her home between 9pm and 7am each day.
