2025 Grammys: Residente and J Balvin Could Meet for the First Time Since Their Beef Began

En español

The feud between J Balvin and Residente has been one of the most talked-about beefs in the world of Latin music. This dispute, which stirred fans and the media alike, could see a new chapter at the 2025 Grammy Awards, where both artists are nominated in the same category.

The start of the feud

The fallout between these former friends began in September 2021 when J Balvin criticized the Latin Grammys for failing to recognize urban artists. He urged his peers to boycott the ceremony, arguing that the academy used them for ratings without giving them due recognition.

Residente, former frontman of Calle 13, responded swiftly. In an Instagram video, he compared Balvin's music to a hot dog stand, saying that while many enjoy it, it cannot be equated to the fine dining experience that other genres offer. He also pointed out that urban artists like C. Tangana, Rauw Alejandro, and Bad Bunny had received nominations, challenging Balvin's complaints.

The fallout seemed very abrupt as Balvin and Residente had been seen as good friends prior to the incident.

The feud escalates

Tensions peaked in March 2022 when Residente released 'BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 49' with the producer Bizarrap. The over-eight-minute track took direct shots at Balvin, calling him "racist" and a "coward" while questioning his authenticity in the industry.

Balvin, however, chose not to engage, later stating in interviews that he preferred to stay out of controversies and focus on his music.

A father's defense

J Balvin's father, Álvaro Osorio, defended his son, stating in interviews and social media posts that José (Balvin's real name) had worked hard for his place in the industry and did not deserve Residente's attacks. He also expressed pride in his son's global success, emphasizing the importance of staying positive.

A Grammy showdown?

On November 10, 2024, the nominees for the 2025 Grammy Awards were announced. Both J Balvin and Residente will be competing for Best Urban Music Album. Balvin is nominated for 'Rayo' and Residente for 'Las Letras Ya No Importan.'

Their nomination in the same category has sparked speculation about a possible face-off on the red carpet or at the ceremony. They won't be the only ones—Drake and Kendrick Lamar, who have an even bigger feud, might also cross paths.

The Grammy Awards are set to take place on February 2, 2025, in Los Angeles. Stay tuned for all the drama and surprises that may unfold.
