While most major primary and general elections in the U.S. take place in even-numbered years, there are several competitive congressional, state, and local-level contests scheduled for 2025. Here are the key races to watch:
January
On January 7, Virginia will hold a special general election to fill two legislative seats in state Senate District and state House District 26. These seats became available after their current occupants won congressional races and have garnered attention from national Democrats.
February
February 18 will see primary elections in Wisconsin for a seat on the state Supreme Court and the state's Superintendent of Public Instruction.
April
On April 1, Florida will hold two special elections for U.S. House seats. The 1st District, a traditionally safe Republican seat, is vacant following the resignation of former Rep. Matt Gaetz, while former Rep. Mike Waltz resigned from the 6th District after being appointed as national security adviser. Wisconsin will also hold general elections for a seat on the state Supreme Court and the state’s Superintendent of Public Instruction on the same day.
May
May 20 will see primary elections in Pennsylvania for the state Supreme Court, Superior Court, the Pittsburgh mayor's race, and municipal contests in Philadelphia.
June
On June 3, New Jersey will hold primary elections for gubernatorial and legislative races. Virginia will have primaries on June 17 for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and House of Delegates. Additionally, on June 24, New York City will hold primaries for its mayoral race and other municipal offices.
November
General elections are scheduled for November 4 in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia for the contests that held primaries earlier in the year.
Stay tuned for updates on these important races as the year progresses.
