The 2024 New York Film Festival has unveiled its main slate lineup, showcasing a diverse array of acclaimed films from around the world. Among the highlights are Cannes winners such as Anora and Seed of the Sacred Fig, along with U.S. premieres of notable works like Mike Leigh's Hard Truths, David Cronenberg's The Shrouds, and Roberto Minervini's The Damned, which also received recognition at Cannes.
The festival's main slate boasts an impressive roster of Cannes prize winners, including Palme d'Or recipient Anora by Sean Baker, Seed of the Sacred Fig by Mohammad Rasoulof, and The Damned, which clinched the best director award in the Un Certain Regard section. Additionally, films like Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light and Miguel Gomes' Grand Tour, both honored at Cannes, will be featured at the NYFF.
Noteworthy Berlin winners set to grace the festival include Mati Diop's Dahomey, Hong Sangsoo’s A Traveler’s Needs, Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham, and Rachel Szor's No Other Land, and Philippe Lesage’s Who by Fire. The event will also premiere Robinson Devor's Suburban Fury, a documentary exploring the political unrest of the 1970s through the lens of Sara Jane Moore, and Julia Loktev’s My Undesirable Friends: Part I, shedding light on independent journalism in Russia.
Artistic director Dennis Lim emphasized the festival's mission to reflect the current cinematic landscape and its intersection with reality. Lim stated, “The most notable thing about the films in the main slate is the degree to which they emphasize cinema’s relationship to reality, showcasing its capacity to reckon with, intervene in, and reimagine the world.”
The festival will kick off with RaMell Ross' Nickel Boys and conclude with Steve McQueen's Blitz, with Pedro Almodóvar's The Room Next Door as the centerpiece film. Running from Sept. 27 to Oct. 14, the 62nd New York Film Festival will take place at Lincoln Center in Manhattan, as well as partner venues in Staten Island, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens.
