2024 NFL draft: 7 most realistic options for the Steelers in the 1st round

When it comes to the 2024 NFL draft, we all have our wish lists for the Pittsburgh Steelers. But who are the guys most likely to be there at the team’s seven biggest positions of need? We went to the PFF mock draft simulator and ran 25 one-round simulations to see which guys were the most likely to be on the board when the Steelers go on the clock.

C Jackson Powers-Johnson, Oregon

If there was a prospect in this entire draft who looks the part of a Steeler it’s former Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson. He’s a 10-year starter and could be the next great Steelers center.

The Steelers got a star from Georgia last season with offensive tackle Broderick Jones. They could go back and get Jones former teammate Amarius Mims to create bookend tackles for a long time on the Steelers offensive line. Another name to watch here if he slides is Alabama’s JC Latham.

CB Quinyon Mitchell, Toledo

Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports

This cornerback class is very talented at the top and Quinyon Mitchell looks like he is the top option to be on the board with the Steelers pick and a perfect fit opposite Joey Porter Jr. A close second here is Missouri’s Ennis Rakestraw Jr. who is a very similar type of player.

LB Payton Wilson, North Carolina State

Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY Sports

One of the fastest risers on defense right now is North Carolina State inside linebacker Payton Wilson. He’s a true sideline-to-sideline defender who can do it all for a defense.

DL Johnny Newton, Illinois

Matt Krohn-USA TODAY Sports

With multiple free agents along the defensive line, the Steelers could easily be inclined to add an interior playmaker line Illinios’ Johnny Newton to pair up with young star Keeanu Benton.

WR Brian Thomas Jr., LSU

Matt Pendleton-USA TODAY Sports

It isn’t likely the Steelers are going to spend a first-round pick on a slot receiver but if by chance Pittsburgh would by chance trade Diontae Johnson, wide receiver immediately becomes a top need and Thomas is a freakish athlete and one of the best deep threats in the draft.

QB Michael Penix Jr., Washington

Craig Strobeck-USA TODAY Sports

If the Steelers decide to add a rookie to seriously compete with Kenny Pickett, it has to be a player drafted early, and the best guy on the board for the Steelers is the uber-athletic Michael Penix Jr.
