It’s probably not a vintage renewal of the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury this Saturday – but since 2007 we have been blessed with big names like Denman, Bobs Worth, Many Clouds and Native River landing this race under big weights.

In more recent years the slightly classier staying chases, that would often end up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, haven’t been on show – but trainer’s Dan Skelton and Jamie Snowden haven’t minded that by winning the last two renewals.

Both are expected to be represented again with 2024 Coral Gold Cup runners, with Skelton having Midnight River and Galia Des Liteaux, and Snowden set to run Colonel Harry for the same connections as his winner 12 months ago.

The last-named horse has been high up the lists with the best horse racing betting sites this week too.

The 2021 winning yard of Venetia Williams could also have Victtorino heading to post, while Willie Mullins could send over his recent Kerry National runner-up Horantzau d’Airy as he looks to defend his British horse racing trainers’ title.

Probably the best Coral Gold Cup trend to take into Saturday’s Newbury race is the age.

A massive 92% of the last 25 winners were aged 8 or younger (23), which means we can rule out any of the runners aged 9+.

Okay, there isn’t many, but at this stage this would put a big negative against Sam Brown (12), Midnight River (9) and Remastered (11)

Since 1968, there’s only been two winners aged in double-figures – which were Sizing Tennessee in 2018 and Diamond Edge in 1981 – both were aged 10.

The last five winners have been aged 7 or 8, while there’s been just one winning 6 year-old in the last 10 runnings. In short recent history has favoured the 7 and 8 year-olds.

12 months ago, Datsalrightgino carried just 10-7 to victory and the last five winners won with 11st or less.

However, if we go back beyond that we saw a wave of six winners since 2012 carry between 11-1 and 11-6 – which tells the weight trend is a big mixed at the moment.

Newbury Course Experience Has Been A Positive

The old ‘horses for courses’ saying comes to light in the Coral Gold Cup too – as 15 of the last 22 winners had run at Newbury over fences before, while nine of those had won a chase race at the Berkshire track in the past.

At this stage the proven course winners are Neon Moon, Henry’s Friend, Kandoo Kid, Sam Brown and Nassalam.

Who Are The Best Coral Gold Cup Trainers?

Jamie Snowden won the Coral Gold Cup in 2023 and is back for more – this time with Colonel Harry.

He’ll be looking to become the first back-to-back winning trainer since Nicky Henderson when he won with Bobs Worth and Triolo D’Alene in 2012 and 2013.

We could also see the three previous winning stables before Snowden again too – as Dan Skelton (2022), Venetia Williams (2021) and Jonjo O’Neill (2020) have entries. Venetia also won the race way back in 1998 with the classy Teeton Mill.

Willie Mullins has won the race once (Total Recall, 2017) and might try to add to that with Horantzau d’Airy.

Paul Nicholls has also taken this prize three times as a trainer – twice with Denman (2007 & 2009) and with Strong Flow before that in 2003.

However, not many people know, he also rode the winner of the race twice.

These came back in 1986 and 1987 on horses called Broadheath and Playschool – both for trainer David Barons.

Nicholls will be looking for his fourth winner (as a trainer) in the race with Kandoo Kid.
