We’re less than 24 hours away from the start of round one at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, for the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship.
Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler, the top two players in the Official World Golf Ranking, have decided to take this week off (all players are permitted to skip one designated event this season).
Max Homa enters the week as the defending champion, although his win came at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm after the venue changed to accommodate the 2022 Presidents Cup being staged at Quail Hollow later in the year. Rory McIlroy, a three-time winner of this event, is the last player to win in Charlotte.

Joel Dahmen ($7,300)
In three starts at Quail Hollow, Dahmen has finished 18th, 2nd and 16th.
Taylor Montgomery ($7,600)
Montgomery’s iron play can hold him back, but he’s one of the best putters on Tour (3rd in SG: Putting). Before missing the cut at the RBC Heritage, he tied for 22nd at the Valero Texas Open.
Keith Mitchell ($7,800)
Mitchell and Sungjae Im teamed up to grab sixth at the Zurich Classic a few weeks ago. In his last two trips to Quail Hollow, Mitchell has finished third and eighth.
Cameron Young ($8,700)
High, drawing bombs and the ability to attack par 5s. That’s how McIlroy has won here three times and it feels like Young could implement the same strategy.
Before a T-51 finish at the RBC Heritage, Young grabbed T-7 at the Masters and was runner-up at the WGC-Dell Match Play.
Jason Day ($9,000)
Day hasn’t played since the Masters (he tied for 39th thanks to a final-round 80). Before the year’s first major, the Aussie rattled off eight straight top-20 performances, including five top 10s.
Although he missed the cut at Quail Hollow in 2021, Day finished 24th in 2019 and won in 2018.
Jordan Spieth ($9,600)
Spieth is on fire. Here are the results of his last five stroke-play event starts: T-4 (Arnold Palmer Invitational), T-19 (Players), T-3 (Valspar Championship), T-4 (Masters) and 2nd (RBC Heritage, lost in a playoff).
The Texan is making his first Wells Fargo Championship start since 2013 (he finished 32nd). For what it’s worth, Spieth went 5-0-0 at the 2022 Presidents Cup and finished 28th at the 2017 PGA Championship (both events were staged at Quail Hollow).
