The 2023 NHL trade deadline has officially passed!
The 3 p.m. ET deadline on Friday come and gone, marking one of the busiest trade deadline periods hockey fans have seen in some time. While deadline day itself was a bit of a snooze, there were still a lot of names dealt over the past few weeks.
A handful of the big names — Patrick Kane, Timo Meier, Ryan O’Reilly, and others — were traded in advance of Friday, with NHL general managers clearly wasting no time in making moves and doing business.
With the trade deadline now finished, here are all the trades that have been made! Plus, there are grades for all the major deals with our early impressions and thoughts.
March 3
Wild acquire John Klingberg from Ducks
Minnesota Wild get: D John Klingberg (50 percent retained)
Anaheim Ducks get: F Nikita Nesterenko, D Andrej Sustr, 2025 fourth-round pick
The Wild getting Klingberg right before the trade deadline passed is quite the pickup! Minnesota has been lacking offensive punch outside of its top-six and getting Klingberg adds a much-needed boost for the Wild in that regard. To get Klingberg at half salary and without giving up a top draft pick makes this deal all the sweeter for the Wild. Good on the Ducks too for getting something out of Klingberg, who is set to be a UFA come summer time. It’s not a fantastic return, but it’s something at the very least.

Arizona Coyotes get: 2023 first-round pick (top-5 protected), 2024 second-round pick (conditional), 2026 second-round pick (conditional)
After a year and a half of being on the market, this is the return the Coyotes get for Chychrun? The Lightning gave up more to get Tanner Jeannot, if you can believe it! It’s possible the Coyotes asked for too much for Chychrun and as a result tanked his value but wow, what a steal for the Senators. I’m not convinced they’re in play for a wild card spot in the East this season, but Chychrun definitely solidifies Ottawa’s top four for the next few years.

Los Angeles Kings get: D Vladislav Gavrikov, G Joonas Korpisalo
Columbus Blue Jackets get: G Jonathan Quick, 2023 first-round pick (conditional), 2024 third-round pick
Definitely the most surprising deal of the deadline so far. No one ever thought Quick would be anything but a King for the rest of his NHL career, so to see him shipped out of Los Angeles feels unbelievable. Not only that, the Kings were near locks on acquiring Chychrun from the Coyotes, but that deal clearly fell apart and they went in a different direction. The Kings do upgrade at two clear points of need, but Quick’s departure definitely overshadows things. Especially considering he’s reportedly not happy with the deal.
Kings: B+
Blue Jackets: B
To say Jonathan Quick is unhappy with the trade, I'm told, is "an understatement."
The entire #LAKings team was a bit down after the game, a win, and you could understandably see it in Anze Kopitar's face after a 4-goal night.
Tough deal, Kings trading a franchise legend.

Washington Capitals get: F Craig Smith, F Andrei Svetlakov, 2023 first-round pick, 2024 third-round pick, 2025 second-round pick

The Bruins get even tougher to play against with a big addition to their blue line. Orlov adds some much-needed depth to the bottom of Boston’s defensive rotation while Hathaway is a perfect fourth-line grinder for this squad. In return, the Capitals begin their process of selling off assets — getting a much-needed first — while the Wild get a fifth round pick for helping retain some of Orlov’s salary.

St. Louis Blues get: F Adam Gaudette, F Mikhail Abramov, 2023 first-round pick, 2023 third-round pick, 2024 second-round pick
Minnesota Wild get: 2025 fourth-round pick
This is the kind of deal Kyle Dubas has to make if the Maple Leafs want to win a playoff round. Gone are the days of trading for fringe depth players such as Nick Foligno and in are big blockbuster moves for star players. The addition of O’Reilly is already paying dividends for the Maple Leafs and the return isn’t half bad for the Blues’ upcoming rebuild as well.
