KenPom Prediction: 64-63 Aztecs
The Rams were the favorite to win the conference this preseason. The Aztecs were chosen to finish in second. Turns out the voters were just slightly off.
The head to head series was split. The Aztecs won by 30 in Viejas arena, and the Rams won by 1 in Moby.
It is a fun matchup as one of the nations best defenses goes up against one of the nations best offenses.
Both teams played close games yesterday. The Rams beat the Aggies by 2 on a clutch sequence where Isaiah Stevens drove into the paint and hit a cutting Chandler Jacobs for the layup.
The Aztecs had made some free throws in the closing seconds, something they’ve struggled with all season, and then Nathan Mensah collected his 4th block of the game to seal the victory.
The winner will be determined by who can play their style better. The Rams will bring their ball movement and ability to score from just about anywhere. Having the conference player of the year won’t hurt either. The Aztecs will bring their swarming defense and try to take the Rams out of their rhythm. They’ll also hope to get a better contribution from first team all conference player Matt Bradley, who was largely ineffective against Fresno while facing double and triple teams all game.
