A 20-year-old man has been charged with the murder of his 10-week-old baby following a tragic incident in a rural town in central Queensland. Emergency services were called to a residence in Gracemere, southwest of Rockhampton, at about 11.15 pm on January 19 after reports emerged that an infant was found unconscious and not breathing.

The baby, who suffered life-threatening injuries, was rushed to Rockhampton Base Hospital before being airlifted to Brisbane, where she sadly died on January 22. Police swiftly launched an investigation into the baby’s sudden death, which led to the arrest and subsequent charge of Tyron Peter Donald Grealy. Grealy faces one count of murder as well as a domestic violence offense, reported by the Daily Mail.

Detective Inspector Luke Peachey, speaking to reporters on Wednesday, described the case as “very traumatic” for all involved. “It’s been a very thorough investigation,” Detective Inspector Peachey said. He further elaborated on the severity of the injuries, stating, “[The baby’s injuries] were substantial… very traumatic, again, for obviously all involved, including the police officers and emergency services.” He added, “Very traumatic to family members involved. We’ll provide support to those out there.”

Following his arrest on Tuesday night, Grealy appeared before Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Wednesday, where he was denied bail. The case has been adjourned for three weeks, and Grealy is expected to apply for bail in the Supreme Court.

The investigation has revealed further disturbing details surrounding the incident. It is understood that the baby suffered fatal head injuries while at the home of long-time Queensland foster carers. One neighbor provided insight into the events of that night, suggesting a connection to previous residents of the home. The neighbor claimed that the baby belonged to a teenage girl who had formerly lived at the property as a foster child.

He further stated that the baby’s mother and her boyfriend had visited the house on the night the baby was injured. “You would only know they were here because the boyfriend’s car was parked (outside the house on the street),” he told The Courier-Mail. “It could be parked for a day, it could be parked for three days.” He added, “They were always together, the boyfriend and (the teen girl) that I saw anyway. It was a complicated little relationship.”

The neighbor also mentioned that the baby’s mother had moved out about two years ago when she was around 15, following the start of a new relationship with her current boyfriend. He noted that the young mum and her boyfriend had visited the home on multiple occasions in recent times, suggesting that the circumstances surrounding the tragedy may be more complex than initially believed.

As the investigation continues, authorities remain committed to uncovering every detail of this devastating incident, while support is being extended to the affected family and community members during this extraordinarily difficult time.
