€20,000 raised for family of doctor who died in freak Mayo car drowning

A fundraiser has been launched to help the family of Dr Sara Ahmed, 30, who has died in what is believed to have been a freak drowning accident.

Dr Farah Ahmed, sadly lost her life late on Friday night when the car she was driving ended up in a river.

A GoFundMe campaign was set up on Saturday with the proceeds going towards the family of Dr Farah Ahmed and has reached €20,279 so far.

The 30-year-old doctor was dead when taken from the partly submerged vehicle at what is known as Hoban’s Carpark, Castlebar, which is adjacent to the Castlebar River.

Gardai believe that Dr Ahmed was reversing at the time and her car, which breached a safety barrier, ended up in the water.

The 30-year-old was originally from Karachi, Pakistan.

The alarm was raised shortly before midnight on Friday 20 January with Dr Ahmed was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her body was removed to Mayo University Hospital where a post-mortem is due to take place.

The fundraiser organised by one of Dr Ahmed’s colleagues describes her as “very professional, intelligent, friendly, helpful, bright and an aspiring young doctor who had her full career ahead of her.

A minute's silence was held during a public meeting at Mayo University Hospital on Saturday as a mark of respect to the deceased, The Connaught Telegraph reports.

Medical colleagues at the hospital are being comforted by the loss of the popular young medic.

An appeal from An Garda Síochána was issued on Saturday morning as Gardaí pleaded with the public for help on what they believe to be a 'freak' and 'tragic' accident.

The statement reads: "Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal single vehicle road traffic incident that occurred in Hoban’s car park, Friday night 20th January 2023.”

"At approximately 11:45pm Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to a car in the river near Hoban’s car park."

The statement continues: "The driver of the car, a female in her 30s was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body has been removed to the mortuary at Mayo General Hospital where a post-mortem will take place at a later date.

"The scene is currently preserved to allow an examination to be conducted by .

"Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to come forward. Any road users who were in the area between 10pm and midnight, who may have camera footage (including dash cam) is asked to make it available to Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Castlebar Garda Station on 094 903 8200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station."
