Two influencers have died after choosing not to wear life jackets while travelling on a speedboat so they wouldn’t ruin their tan.
Pleas for 27-year-old Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria and Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim, 37, to wear life preservers fell on deaf ears during a treacherous journey, according to local media. The Mirror also reports that mother-of-one Aline was unable to swim.
The pair were on a boat with four other influencers heading from a yacht party back to shore when it capsized in Devil Throat’s rough waters in the Iguazu River.
“Some didn’t want to put [life jackets] on because they were taking selfies. They said that they get in the way of their tanning,” Sao Vincente police commissioner Marcos Alexandre Alfino claimed.
The boat driver admitted to police that he had been forced to drive six influencers back to shore, even though his boat’s maximum capacity was five. The heavier load meant that when a rough wave hit the boat, it started to sink.
“All this is being determined very calmly to conclude if the fatalities were based on recklessness or negligence,” the police commissioner added.
Survivor Vanessa Audrey da Silva told local outlets she was able to get a life jacket on and held tightly to some rocks.
“There was a moment in the water when no one could see anyone. I was fighting for [my] life,” she said.
A second survivor, Camila Alves de Carvalho, said she held onto a life jacket as she was thrown around in the water.
“There were very strong waves, we almost died. We didn’t know how to swim. I knew that I couldn’t take it for long. I hurt my foot and swallowed a lot of water. We threw ourselves into the rocks,” she said.
Local police are now investigating whether or not the influencers’ deaths were accidental or preventable.
