2 dead, 10 hospitalized after 2 boats crashed off Key Biscayne, Coast Guard said

MIAMI — A dozen people were on two boats that crashed off Key Biscayne’s coast Friday night.

Two of them died, the Coast Guard said on Saturday. Ten were taken to area hospitals.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue had recovered the body of one of the victims in Biscayne Bay and a Coast Guard crew from Miami Beach found the other victim after a search into Saturday morning.

The Coast Guard did not release their identities.

According to reports, the boats crashed near Nixon Beach around 10:30 Friday night.

A person involved in the boat collision notified Coast Guard Sector Miami watchstanders that 12 people were in the water about a mile west of Key Biscayne, according to the Coast Guard.

A rescue swimmer initially found two critically injured survivors and transferred one of them to a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crew who brought that survivor to Jackson Memorial.

The other survivors were taken to Mercy Hospital.

“On behalf of the Coast Guard and our partner agencies, we’d like to offer our sincerest condolences to the families and friends who lost their loved ones,” said Lt. Cmdr. Benjamin Tuxhorn, Coast Guard Sector Miami search and rescue mission coordinator. “The Coast Guard and our local partner agencies quickly responded and exhaustively worked together on this search and rescue case.”

The crash is now being investigated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
