2 businesses move to converted apartment in East Leake

Residents in East Leake have shared their thoughts on two new businesses joining the village in a converted apartment. Some say a GP surgery, restaurant or pub would have been preferred for the area - but others are happy.

A former ground floor apartment in the village has been transformed into two units. Two independent companies have moved into them - Smiths Property Experts and Double Ds Coffee - with the estate agents already open and ready for business.

Co-owner of Smiths Property Experts, Lucinda Smith, said: "We are very excited to launch our new business here. East Leake is a lovely village with a vibrant community.

"We are delighted to join a host of other like-minded independent businesses. The location is perfect for access to the areas we cover throughout Leicestershire and south Nottinghamshire."

Owner of Double Ds Coffee, Alex Dodd, added: "It's exceptional being given this opportunity. I feel like the village has really taken me and my wife Devon under its wing." Alex hopes the business will be ready to open on March 4.

Plenty of villagers are pleased to see the two independent businesses join the high street. But East Leake resident Martin Johnson, 51, said: "It would be nice to have some more different businesses as these are the same sort we already have.

"It would be good to have a restaurant or another pub." Speaking of the new businesses, a retired resident in their 80s said: "That's great. It would be nice to have more independents here."

Retired Julie Cooper, 70, said: "I've noticed the estate agents has opened. I don't know about that as there are already two here, but it's independent so perhaps that makes a difference as it's not just another chain.

"I did hear rumours there would be a coffee shop too. I think it's quite good, I'm glad they're local businesses."

Retired Brian Clarke, 79, said a coffee shop "would be nice as we only have Birds". When asked if he thought it was good to have the new businesses, machinery operator Andy Farrow, 60, said: "There are too many houses now so we need more businesses here.

"It would have been good if they built a doctors or something like that as we have had the same surgery for 40 years. That's three estate agents we've got now within 100 yards of each other.

"There are also three Chinese takeaways, a chip shop and an Indian within 100 yards of each other."
