£2.6 million extension at South Nottinghamshire Academy officially opens

A Nottinghamshire school has officially opened its new building following a £2.6m extension. Students, staff and governors of South Nottinghamshire Academy, based in Radcliffe on Trent, attended the site for a tour of the new facilities.

The new building was funded by Redhill Academy Trust, Nottinghamshire County Council and Section 106 funds. The two-storey extension will allow the school to continue growing to meet demand for school places in the local area, with the academy now being able to enrol 950 students from Years 7 to 13.

The ground floor of the Maple building contains five classrooms which will be used by the humanities faculty. Whereas the first floor has three classrooms, two of which are for ICT, as well as two smaller seminar classrooms and a common room area.

Dan Philpotts, Executive Headteacher at South Nottinghamshire Academy, said: "The new Maple building accommodation will provide our school community with a long-lasting, modern-day facility that will undoubtedly enhance students’ educational experience. We are so proud of our first-class facilities, and we look forward to a very exciting future."

Andrew Burns, Chief Executive of Redhill Academy Trust, added: “We are all pleased to see the continued popularity and demand for places at the South Nottinghamshire Academy. These great new facilities will help our students achieve their very best”.

The building was built by the contractor G F Tomlinson with Pulse Consultants managing the project. Construction work began on the site in Spring 2022, with workers spending a total of 33,515 hours on the site, 530 tonnes of concrete being poured and 148 glazed panels being installed.

In addition to the extension, the school has also invested in a new 3G artificial floodlit sports pitch, a new school minibus and an outdoor shelter that can cover 150 students from the elements. Emma Swatton, Head Girl, said: “The new building has given us the freedom and ability to work collaboratively and achieve our full potential as students at South Nottinghamshire Academy.”

Joe White, Head Boy, added: “The new Maple Building is an incredible facility. It is new, fresh and exciting and it feels really special to use the space to enhance our education.”
