For the trend-curious, the retailer has recently released its trend report, wherein they have revealed some of its top vintage trends based on what its customers are searching for and purchasing. While we of course love speaking with designers and interiors experts about the trends ahead, looking at shopping trends can be just as interesting and insightful and often show really specific styles we are all incorporating right now.
The 1st Dibs e-commerce report is a treasure trove of inspiring ideas and there are some clear design trends coming through, from the ever-popular mid-century modern, to more niche buys around home bars and statement lighting.
1. Mid-century modern
Mid-century modern decor has been a mainstay in interior trends since its '90s resurgence, appealing to many thanks to its durable materials and modern shapes. Now, 1stDibs editorial director Anthony Barzilay Freund says that the beloved trend is more popular than ever thanks to their durability and versatility.
'The decades following the end of the Second World War were marked by optimism, a shedding of old tropes and ideas, and an embrace of the modern age and the promise of new technologies,' he states. 'In places like Scandinavia and Italy, this forward-thinking aesthetic still preferences beautiful, old-world materials like fine wood and glass – pieces from this era emanate an energy that resonates with collectors to this day.'
2. Togo seating
The slouchy nature of a beanbag chair meets the sophisticated silhouette of a luxe lounge seat with Togo – the ideal furnishing to curl up next to the fire on. Opt for a bold color, like mustard yellow or royal blue, for an extra pop in a living room.
'It seems like there is no end to the popularity of low-slung leather seating, whether sofas or chairs, from the 1970s,' Anthony tells us. 'The Togo is the epitome of relaxed cool, which we also admire in the films and fashion of that era.'
3. 1960s brass lighting
It's no secret that vintage pieces make highly popular lighting choices, but 1stDibs has revealed that 1960s brass vintage lighting specifically is on the rise.
'A metalworker by training, Tynell is considered the great innovator of Finnish lighting design, melding brass and glass in wonderful ways,' Anthony tells us. 'An example of his pendant light from the 1950s, offered on the site for nearly $250,000, was among the highest-value sales we saw on 1stDibs last year.'
We love how brass lighting adds vintage character and a sophisticated feel to any space. Sconces in particular contribute to a traditional yet sleek appearance in the home.
4. Eames Lounge Chairs
When it comes to iconic chair designs, Eames tops this list. Originating in 1956 by Ray and Charles Eames, the original fiberglass design prevails alongside other iterations that have hit the market since (though we are partial to a classic, leather seat).
'A lot of furniture pieces are referred to as ‘iconic,’ but the Eames Lounge chair could be the poster child for that term,' Anthony states. 'It’s known and loved by casual design fans and connoisseurs alike.'
5. Dining and bar Seating
Finally, as we continue to make our homes hubs for drinking and entertaining, selecting chic and styling seating for bars and tables is a high priority when it comes to home bar ideas.
'Dining chairs and bar stools were among the most popular searches in the Furniture category, proving that a penchant for stylish home entertaining remains strong – even several years after the pandemic, when we saw an unprecedented interest in our dining spaces and kitchens,' Anthony explains.
Decorating with vintage is a sure-fire way to add character to your home, and even though these pieces might reflect the shopping habits of right now, you know buying second hand is always going to be timeless.
