Yellowstone prequel 1923 is back for season two, and it’s arriving sooner than expected. The Taylor Sheridan show follows an earlier generation of the Dutton family, with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren playing the lead roles of Jacob and Cara.
It’s set in the early 20th century and sees the Duttons battle historic drought, pandemics, and the end of Prohibition in the mountain west. If you’re wondering how it’s connected to the rest of the Yellowstone universe, John Dutton (Kevin Costner) is a descendant of Jacob and Cara. Jacob is also the brother of Tim McGraw’s James Dutton who appeared in 1883.
Season one cost USD $22 million per episode and Sheridan told Deadline he wrote the roles for Jacob and Cara specifically for Ford and Mirren. The actors actually committed to the TV show before any scripts were written, which is unusual.
It wasn’t hard to get the cast to come back for round two, with Sheridan saying Ford and Mirren were “excited”.
“They only signed on originally for one season. They were so eager to continue it… Harrison made a comment at one point, he goes, ‘Taylor I think I’m making the best thing I’ve made in 20 years’. And my response to him was, ‘What the fuck did you make 20 years ago as good as this? What was that? I missed that one’,” Sheridan said.
Fans were left with plenty of unanswered questions after the nail-biting 1923 season one finale, so it’ll be a relief to finally get some resolutions. We’re still waiting to find out what happened to Teonna (Aminah Nieves), and will Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) and his wife Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) be reunited?

When will 1923 Season 2 be released in Australia?
1923 season two will hit Paramount+ on February 23, 2025. There will be eight episodes in total, and I can’t wait!!! It’s the perfect timing, seeing as Yellowstone season five wraps up this month.
Who’s in the cast for 1923 Season 2?
Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren are back as Jacob and Cara Dutton, plus there are a bunch of other faves returning. Brandon Sklenar, Darren Mann, Michelle Randolph, Julia Schlaepher, Timothy Dalton, Jerome Flynn, Brian Geraghty, Sebastian Roché and Aminah Nieves are all in the cast.
Jennifer Carpenter has also been added to the cast, to play the role of Mamie Fossett, a U.S Deputy Marshall set to shake things up!
What else do we know about 1923 Season 2?
Taylor Sheridan thinks of 1923 season one as part of a season, saying that he has so much story to wrap up.
“This one is different from 1883 where I had the whole thing blocked out in my head. This one, I had no idea what I was going to do. I just went on a journey myself,” he told Deadline.
He asked the network for eight more episodes to “finish” the story, saying: “I need to do this in two blocks. An eight-episode block and a second eight-episode block to wrap this up. I can’t wrap it up in two episodes and do the story justice.”
Sheridan has been given full reign by Paramount+ to finish the series, and from his above comments, it seems like there won’t be a season three.
“No one has had the freedom I’ve had since Robert Evans ran Paramount,” Sheridan claimed. “If you trust them, trust them, and turn them loose.”
