19-year-old Canberra woman dies after collision between car and e-scooter in Kambah

A young woman has died after her electric scooter and a motor vehicle collided in Canberra's south yesterday afternoon.

Police said the 19-year-old was thrown a "substantial" distance across the intersection of Drakeford Drive and O’Halloran Circuit in Kambah after the car hit her e-scooter.

Officers also said the woman was not wearing a helmet.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 3:10pm on Sunday and took the woman to Canberra Hospital with serious head and leg injuries.

Police confirmed this morning she had died in hospital.

'Tragic and preventable'

Detective Acting Inspector Paul Hutcheson offered the police's condolences to the woman's family and friends, and spoke of the "wide-ranging" impacts of road deaths.

"This is another tragic and preventable death of a young Canberran on ACT roads," he said.

"The impacts of this incident are very significant and wide-ranging throughout the community."

Detective Hutcheson also raised the importance of wearing a helmet while on e-scooters.

"It's nothing new, you don't need to know the e-scooter rules to know to wear a helmet, obey the speed limit, cross the road safely, [and] look both ways before crossing," he said.

"It's exactly the same rules that we talk about for cyclists, pedestrians or car users."

He said officers had heard from several witnesses at the scene but urged any other witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage to contact them.

ACT Policing's Major Collision Team is investigating into the crash and will prepare a report for the coroner.

The woman's death is the 12th on ACT roads this year.
