An 18-year-old man has been detained on suspicion of killing former Ukrainian lawmaker Iryna Farion, 60, in the city of Lviv. Farion died in the hospital last Friday after being shot in western Ukraine.
The suspect was tracked down by a specialist team of Ukrainian security forces and criminal analysts after 139 hours of investigative work. Authorities scoured about 100 hectares of forest and identified him using surveillance cameras.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko praised the team's efforts, stating, 'Identifying and detaining the offender was a laborious process that required the highest professionalism, endurance, and discipline to avoid making any mistakes.'
President Volodymyr Zelensky commended the security forces for their dedication in uncovering the truth behind the crime.
Farion, a former nationalist parliamentarian and professor, was known for her stance against the Russian language, which led to a criminal investigation against her last year. She had expressed strong opinions regarding Russian-speaking members of the Armed Forces.
Her statements triggered controversy within Ukrainian society, reflecting the ongoing tensions in the region.
