17 things Liverpool girls were obsessed with in the 2000s

The 2000s was an iconic decade for young girls and teenagers who will remember being obsessed with various things that are no longer considered popular.

From fashion to beauty trends, music to films, some things have thankfully stayed in the Noughties, while others we secretly wish were still on trend here in Liverpool. Many people will recall rushing home from school to watch Disney Channel, while others couldn’t wait to chat to their friends on MSN for hours, despite being with them at school all day.

Some will relate to the regret of transforming their hair with a chunky side fringe and colourful thick highlights. Others will clearly remember going overboard with the cheap fake tan.

The ECHO has compiled the below list of 17 things most Liverpool girls were obsessed with in the 2000s. If you don't recall going through specific trends, we guarantee you know friends who did.

1. Paul’s Boutique handbags. You may remember the majority of girls at your school having one of the bright bags with the iconic slogan ‘I heart PB’ across it. Many also came with extravagant keyrings clipped onto the handle.

2. Spending every Saturday browsing the shops in Liverpool ONE and sunbathing in Chavasse Park.

3. Chunky side fringes. Why did we think a block of hair covering one eye like a pirate was a good look?

4. Wearing UGG boots no matter the occasion. Even the rain didn’t stop us from wearing them, resulting in very soggy feet.

5. Dying strips of our hair a bright colour. Then being incredibly annoyed when it disappeared after a few washes.

6. Buying the latest Now That’s What I Call Music CD as soon as it was released and listening to it all day, every day.

7. Wearing brightly coloured eyeshadow and glittery lipgloss. If you were one of the girls who were instructed by your parents to wipe it off, you’d sneakily reapply it as soon as you’d left the house.

8. Rushing home from school to watch Disney Channel favourites, including Hannah Montana and Lizzy McGuire.

9. Wearing chains on our trousers. Made popular by skater chicks (we’re looking at you, Avril Lavigne), all of a sudden girls started clipping chains to their belt loops.

10. Watching Mean Girls on repeat and quoting it daily with friends.

11. Wearing denim shorts with tights.

12. While we’re on the subject of tights - fishnets. Let’s be honest, they were pretty pointless, with our legs being just as cold as they would be if we didn’t wear any. They'd rip really easily, too.

13. Covering our bodies in cheap fake tan usually bought from Home Bargains, resulting in an Oompa-Loompa appearance. Many people will recall their skin turning green, and who could forget the vile smell?

14. Wearing colourful bandanas as a hair accessory.

15. Anything neon - beaded necklaces, bows in our hair, fingerless gloves, bangles…

16. Cowboy boots. They didn’t last as long in the spotlight as UGG boots did, but many will remember feeling like a grown-up as they clippety-clopped down the street in their leather cowboy boots.

17. Chatting to your friends on MSN all evening, even though you were with them all day at school. Who could ever forget those annoying “nudges” you could send to each other?
