The NFL increased the practice squad to 16 players because of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and continued it in 2021. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the expanded practice squad is expected to continue in 2022.
Fowler reported Tuesday that owners were set to discuss practice squad rules this week and that it was likely to continue with 16 players.
The expanded practice squad has been good for more players, especially since teams also had no limit of veterans they could sign.
Originally, only players with less than a certain experience level were eligible for the practice squad. The league expanded it to veterans as well to accommodate COVID protocols.
If the NFL continues the practice from the past two seasons, it is unlikely that players would push back. Expanded practice squads mean more players are employed, even if it means that more players have to fit under the salary cap.
