£150m Sky TV deal 'in limbo' as Rangers leave SPFL sweating ahead of midnight deadline

SPFL chiefs have reportedly been left sweating by Rangers over the fate of the proposed £150million broadcast deal with hours remaining before the voting deadline.

The new TV agreement with Sky is set to kick in from the start of the 2024-25 season, and it will allow the media behemoth to broadcast 60 games per season, up from 48 on the current contract. The Daily Mail state doubts remains over what Rangers will decide. The deal needs all 12 Premiership clubs to be in unanimous agreement to increase live televised home matches from four to five per season. It's believed the other 11 teams in the top flight have backed it.

The £30m-per-season deal would see Sky remain the home of Scottish football for years to come but all eyes are on Rangers before the deadline closes on Saturday night. It's understood other top-flight clubs are hopeful the Europa League finalists will submit a "letter of waiver" before the clock strikes midnight. Clubs were given 28 days to mull over the proposals but that grace period for deliberation is now set to expire.

The waiting games comes amid a run of high-profile differences between the SPFL and Rangers in recent years. The Ibrox side were successfully excused from advertising league sponsor cinch. They have also previously called for the resignations of SPFL supremo Neil Doncaster, chairman Murdoch MacLennan and legal counsel Rod MacKenzie.

The new Sky deal, which will see yearly payments rise from £25m to £30m, is accompanied by two extra 10 game bundles, at a cost of £4m each. Sky have first refusal on both, but if they say no then they will be opened up to bidding with other broadcasters able to strike.
