£150 DWP cost of living payment to hit millions of bank accounts next week

Millions of eligible households are set to receive a £150 cost of living support payment next week. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) recently confirmed that around six million people across the UK will receive a one-off £150 disability cost of living payment as part of the UK Government's plan to help those hardest hit by the cost of living crisis.

Prime Minister Liz Truss recently revealed a £150bn plan which will see the typical household energy bill capped at £2,500 per year for two years, though gas and electric customers will still be paying almost double what they were last winter. Rising costs of fuel, supermarket items and other households costs have led to financial uncertainty for people across the UK in the past year.

With the disability payment set to begin landing in millions of bank accounts next week, we've broken down exactly what the payment is, who is eligible and when and how you will receive it. What is the £150 disability cost of living payment?

In August the UK government confirmed that around six million people with disabilities will receive a £150 cost-of-living payment from the end of September. The one-off payment, originally announced in May, will be paid automatically to people who receive certain disability benefits. You may get a lump sum payment of £150 if you’re getting any award level for one of the following:

Attendance allowance

Constant attendance allowance

Disability living allowance for adults

Disability living allowance for children

Personal independence payment

Adult disability payment

Child disability payment

Armed Forces independence payment

War pension mobility supplement

I claim one of these benefits - am I definitely eligible?

There are some other criteria you must meet in order to receive the payments. You must have received a payment (or later receive a payment) of one of the qualifying benefits for May 25, 2022 to get the £150 payment.

If you get a qualifying disability benefit from the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and a qualifying disability benefit from DWP, you will get a disability cost of living payment from the DWP only.

When and how will I receive the money?

The department has confirmed that the money will start landing in bank accounts from Tuesday, September 20, with the “vast majority” of those eligible expected to receive the money by the beginning of October. The payment will be made directly into your bank account if you are eligible - you do not have to do anything in order to get it. In a further update the DWP said: “Those who had confirmed payment of their disability benefit for May 25 are expected to be paid shortly after the payment window opens.

“For those awaiting confirmation of their disability benefits on May 25, or who are waiting to be assessed for eligibility to receive disability benefits, the process may take longer but payments will still be automatic.”

I am not eligible for this payment - are there other payments I can get?

Yes. If you aren't eligible for this, there are a number of different cost of living payments being given out to households. If you claim universal credit or another means-tested benefit, for example, you might be eligible for the £324 cost of living payment to low-income households being given by the end of next month. You can read more about that here.

If you’re entitled to a Winter Fuel Payment for winter 2022 to 2023, you will get an extra £300 for your household paid with your normal payment from November 2022. This is in addition to any cost of living payment you get with your benefit or tax credits.
