144Th White House Easter Egg Roll Celebrates Tradition

White house A general view of the White House in Washington

This week, the White House is abuzz with excitement as preparations are underway for the 144th annual White House Easter Egg Roll. This cherished tradition dates back to the 1870s and continues to captivate children and families alike with its festive and fun-filled activities.

On Monday, children will gather on the White House South Lawn to partake in the iconic egg roll, using wooden spoons to push brightly colored, hard-boiled eggs across the grass. Despite the challenges of political polarization and global conflicts, this tradition has endured, bringing joy and laughter to generations of young participants.

This year's event, themed 'EGGucation,' promises to be an educational extravaganza for children of all ages. The South Lawn and Ellipse will be transformed into a school community, complete with engaging STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) activities.

Approximately 40,000 visitors are expected to attend the festivities, including military and veteran families, caregivers, and survivors. Rain may be in the forecast, but the spirit of the event remains sunny as attendees gear up for a day of egg-citing adventures.

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden are set to make an appearance at the event, joining special guests and costumed characters in spreading Easter cheer. The American Egg Board has ensured that there will be no shortage of eggs, with 64,000 eggs ready for the egg roll, egg hunt, and other egg-themed activities.

Despite recent controversies surrounding the White House's commemoration of Transgender Day of Visibility, the focus of the day remains on celebrating the joy and camaraderie of the Easter Egg Roll. As families gather to enjoy the festivities, the timeless tradition of rolling eggs on the White House lawn continues to unite and delight participants of all backgrounds.
