A 13-year-old boy took his parents' Toyota Corolla for an unauthorized joyride early Tuesday morning, leading South Pasadena police on a brief high-speed chase.

The incident began just before 3 a.m. when an officer attempted to stop the older-model Toyota after it ran a stop sign, East Bay Times reported. Instead of pulling over, the young driver sped off, reaching speeds of 65 mph during a three-minute pursuit that covered a mile and a half.

The chase ended at York Boulevard and Branch Street in Los Angeles, where the driver finally stopped. Police discovered that the driver and his passenger were both 13 years old.

Officers contacted the boy's parents, who came to the scene to retrieve their children. The father declined to press car theft charges but received a ticket alongside his son for reckless evading police, according to Cpl. Gilbert Carrillo of the South Pasadena Police Department.

No injuries or damages were reported in the incident.
