12 fun things to do in and around Bristol with kids this July

Forecasters are predicting hot weather throughout July - perfect for exploring the city's  stunning green and open spaces.

As the days grow warmer, it's such a treat to be able to plan activities outside and let the little ones enjoy some long-awaited sunshine.

The glorious conditions mean we can get out and about to explore places we might not have visited before.

We've rounded up the best events planned for July to make sure you don't miss out on anything.

 

SS Great Britain: Sea Hear Storytelling


This monthly event offers little ones the chance to hear some captivating maritime tales.

The free sessions are hosted in the Brunel Institute and include stories of whales and angel fish, pirate treasure and stormy seas.

When?   July 2 at 11am.

Miniature railway : Ashton Court

Showcasing a range of real steam, electric and petrol driven trains, this mini railway offers hours of entertainment for the little ones.

Bristol Model Engineers plan to host two sessions throughout July at their site at the top of Ashton Court.

When? July 14 and 21.

Climate action: We the Curious

Throughout the school holidays this attraction is hosting an event to get kids thinking about positive actions for a better world.

Using interactive props, organisers hope to get children thinking about the air we breathe, the food we eat and the people who can make a difference.

When? From May 27 until the end of  summer holidays.

Harbour Festival

Bristol Harbour Festival is always a summer highlight (Colin Rayner)

This is always a firm favourite on Bristol's calendar. From circus acts, to story telling tents, ball pools and fairground rides, there's a host of entertainments to dazzle kids. Plus there's the added bonus of witnessing some impressive boats on the water.

Between all of this you might even get a chance to even watch some live music.

When?  From July 19 to 21.

Wonders of the walled garden: Tyntesfield

 

Young green fingered enthusiasts should enjoy this  family-friendly gardening workshop where kids will be given a  tour of the venue's walled gardens and then offered the chance to make something tasty to eat afterwards.

The session is aimed at kids aged five to 12.

When? July 23 at 10:30am.

Horrible Histories: Bristol Hippodrome

Using actors and 3D special effects, the actors will bring to life the interesting lives of both the Tudors and Egyptians during two hilarious shows.

When? Between July 24 to 27.

Family pond sessions: Windmill Hill Farm

For kids who love to get up close and personal with wildlife, these free sessions at the community farm will be perfect.

Organisers will be hosting two groups each day during the summer holidays starting at 10am and 1pm.

When? From July 25 to August 21.

We're going on a bear hunt: Old Vic

This smash-hit production of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt is coming to Bristol  directly after its stint at the West End.

Little ones can expect lots of singing and music during the 55-minute show. The performance is billed as being ideal for kids aged three or older.

When? July 26 to 29.

Be Not Afeard:  Creative Workspace

As part of the city's Shakespeare festival, this venue is hosting a highly 'iimmersive and sensory' version of The Tempest.

Aimed at kids aged between 0 to seven, this play promises music and lots of fun.

When? J uly 27 at 11am

Camp Bestival, Dorest

Kids will be blown away by this magical festival offering everything from go carts, to soft play tents.

They can also learn a few circus tricks while having their face painted or spinning round on a vintage fairground ride.

As darkness falls, there'll be campfire songs and a chance to enjoy some creative play.

When? July 25 to 28

Mini pizza making: Windmill Hill Farm

Families will be able to design and cook their own mini pizzas in an outdoor woodburning oven during this class.

The venue is hosting two sessions starting at 10am and 1pm.

When? July 31.

Expect mind-boggling impressive magic tricks, juggling and a humorous monkey assistant.

This one hour show is being hosted at Zion Community Art Space.
