Live theatre, comedy and music can often seem like luxuries when living on a budget but here are some ways to keep costs low or even get tickets for free.
The Empire Theatre, Everyman, Floral Pavilion and more offer a huge amount of shows every week but if you are living as a student or operating on a budget, these may feel like an unnecessary expense.
The good news is that most venues have schemes in place to help make live theatre more affordable and accessible.

Here are 11 ways you can continue your hobby without breaking the bank
Liverpool Everyman Theatre and Playhouse membership
Signing up for the Young Everyman Playhouse membership is free and allows anyone aged between 14-25 access to free workshops and pre-show events. Tickets to selected performances can then be as little as £5 per person.
If you are a Liverpool John Moores University student then regardless of your age, you can sign up for a free YEP membership as well.
Free tickets at Hot Water Comedy Club
Free tickets are available throughout the week for anyone up for a laugh at the Hot Water Comedy Club, located on Hardman Street. This basement theatre showcases local Merseyside talent most evenings with no payment necessary. Top named comedians such as Paul Smith and Paddy McDonnell also perform here with tickets costing around £12.
Liverpool Philharmonic student offer
For most Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra events, under-25s, Students and those in receipt of Universal Credit or Jobseekers’ Allowance can purchase tickets for just £8*, subject to availability. Discounted tickets can be purchased in person or by phone (0151 709 3789).
"Pay what you decide" at Shakespeare North Playhouse
Sold on a first come, first serve basis, “Pay what you decide” tickets are a scheme set up by the playhouse to allow everyone to enjoy Shakespeare. Tickets are £3 with extra only being added if it can be afforded.
Royal Court Theatre student bookings
Students can receive £5 off advanced bookings for productions at the Royal Court Theatre. For 10p those who don’t mind being on their feet can buy standing tickets from the venue at 6pm on the day of each performance for a cheap theatre treat.
The Floral Pavilion concession tickets
Concession tickets include students and are available for selected shows at the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton. The box office will be able to give more information on which shows these are available at.
Liverpool Empire Theatre cheap seats
Although the Empire Theatre doesn’t have specific deals for students, tickets can cost as little as £13 for big name productions and West End tours. Even though these seats may be slightly further from the stage, they are a more affordable option.

If your friends are fellow theatre-lovers and want to watch a Royal Court production, one in ten get to go free.
Unity Theatre student concession
Concession tickets are available for full time students with a valid ID. The theatre also chooses to use an unreserved auditorium, this means all tickets are the same price regardless of where you end up sitting.
Local Theatre
Liverpool is full of smaller theatres that showcase local talent for far cheaper than West End tours. The quality is often more impressive than expected and it also supports local businesses.
Smaller performance spaces to check out are- Casa Bar Theatre in Liverpool, The Citadel Theatre in St Helens, Next Chapter Studio in Toxteth and The Little Theatre in Southport.
