11 things I learned from going to uni in Liverpool

If you've been to, or are currently attending, university in Liverpool, there are a few things only you will know.

With three major universities all located in or near the city centre, Liverpool has a massive student population. However, no matter which university you go to, there are some things that all students will learn while studying in the city.

You might have come to uni thinking all the learning was going to be done in lectures and seminars, but after studying in Liverpool for a while you'll know that's not the case. So here's a list of things, from nights out to where you go to study, that I learned as a student.

1. You will bump into everyone you know at the Raz on a Monday

Everyone and their mum goes out on a Monday night, and they all go to the Raz (the Blue Angel on Seel Street). So, chances are you'll see everyone, including your course-mate, your mate's old housemate, and that guy that showed up to one lecture in week one and then disappeared.

2. Deadlines come at you faster than you think they will

Not that I ever learned my lesson and started working on things ahead of time. No matter how many times your tutors tell you when something is due in, it will also suddenly be in two days when you finally get round to it.

3. Where to find cheap, ugly shirts

S**t shirt socials seemed to come around every few weeks, so I'd need to make last-minute trips to Primark to grab something I didn't mind getting ruined on a night out.

4. When the last 699 leaves for town

If you were in off-campus accommodation in first year, or living off Smithdown in second year, you're best bet for getting into town was hopping on the last 699 bus, which usually left around 11pm. But if you miss it, there's always the 86.

5. How to switch which football team you support in a hurry

Some people will stick to their guns if they've moved city for uni, and remain loyal to their home team. But other people (myself included) might pick and choose who they support when they move, especially if they're having a good season.

6. How to revise in the middle of a building site

Is your uni even your uni if there aren't constant building works going on? Some people might have invested in noise-cancelling headphones during exam season in order to block out the noise.

7. Don't walk up Mount Pleasant if you don't want to arrive at your lecture dripping in sweat

It might as well be Mount Everest for the amount of effort it is to walk up that hill. You will never know shame like arriving to a lecture a few minutes late after trying to speed-walk up Mount Pleasant.

8. A night out in Liverpool is on the Lonely Planet guide of 50 things to do before you die

When you arrive in Liverpool as a student, every Student's Union leader and lecturer will probably tell you this. It's a great fact to bring out when you have friends visiting for the weekend.

9. How to get a cheaper lunch

Guild burritos are cheaper after 2pm, the most cost-efficient Tesco meal deal drink is the Naked smoothie: Once you've been a student in Liverpool for a while you'll have figured out where you can get a filling meal for a lower price.

10. Where the warm spots in the library are

You won't always get your choice of seats in the Sydney Jones or Aldham Robarts, especially in exam season, but if you can nab one away from the draughty windows and in one of the warmer spots, your body will thank you.

11. The best time to go to Greggs on Brownlow Hill

It might feel like there's a never-ending queue outside Greggs, but if you can get there at around 25 minutes past the hour (after the rush of people who've just come out a lecture, but before the wave of people wanting to grab something before they head into their next one) you'll be able to sail through.
