11 brilliant new bars and restaurants to try in Glasgow this September

Say hello to your monthly edition of new eats and treats. You're welcome, Glasgow.

Every month we round up the hottest new openings so that you have a list of places to try out the next time you're hitting the town.

August's list is a bumper edition with everything from Peri Peri chicken to Italian street food, Gerry Cinnamon-themed eateries (no, really) and the return of a top food market, this time for good.

And that's before we get to everyone's favourite pizza place announcing a new restaurant dedicated entirely to fresh pasta. We're not drooling, you are.

September really is going to be a busy one - but we'll all be fat and happy together.

Nurdy Burdy

Avo Avo may have closed its doors but there’s a new restaurant in Finnieston - and it’s serving up Peri Peri chicken by the bucketload. The unit has been taken over by Nurdy Burdy which, as the name suggests, is all about the bird bits. Portuguese sunshine on the Finnie strip? Bring. It. On.

Julie’s Kopitiam at the Acid Bar

One of Glasgow’s favourite spots has just opened a second, albeit temporary location - so get in while you can. Julie’s Kopitiam is the latest eatery to take up residency at SWG3’s Acid Bar, providing Malaysian flavours on the north side of the Clyde as well as at Julie’s Shawlands kitchen. Glasgow Live has been in for a taste and it’s a resounding thumbs up - a must for westenders to try before it’s gone.

Piatto

Street food? We like it. Italian food? We bloody love the stuff. So news that there’s a new grab and go spot on Shawlands’ trendy Skirving Street has our tongues wagging. Pizza, pasta, breaded goodness - it all appears to be in here and we’ll be joining the queue for a taste ASAP. Get down to Piatto while it’s still new and then spread the word to your friends - you’re welcome for that smug foodie feeling, FYI.

Dockyard Social

The street food market has been on hiatus for nine months but, finally, there’s movement afoot at the warehouse in Yorkhill. Dockyard returns this weekend (Friday, August 23) - and it’ll be a weekly fixture from now on, with bigger and better to come according to owner Kyle Steel. Here’s why he thinks it’s a game-changer for Glasgow.

The Duke*

Okay, it’s not a new place at all - in fact, pints have been pulled at The Duke as far back as the 1800s. Still, the Dennistoun stalwart has had a makeover, with £50,000 spent on renovating it outside and in. That means a new selection of drinks - and a few charity endeavours too, as our reporter found out on a recent visit. You’ve got to love when a pub revamps but stays the same, especially when that means a continued community vibe - and we’re sure east end locals agree.

Bar Vini

Antipasti, wine, stunning interiors … what’s not to like about the newest opening on Victoria Road ? The stretch occupied by Nanika and Lagom Kitchen is fast becoming one of the trendiest streets in Glasgow - and Bar Vini should prove an exciting addition to that already thriving foodie quarter on the edge of Govanhill.

Canter

(Canter/Facebook)

So, you’re opening a takeaway in Castlemilk. What do you call it? Well, you could go for a generic, JustEat-friendly name - or you could name it in honour of the Chateau Lait’s favourite son. Canter  will be serving up tasty takeaway treats from Glenwood Business Centre - and they say that means everything from home cooked meals to Sunday dinners. Here’s hoping Big Gerry pays a visit …

Mezcal

Mexcal, a new taqueria on Hope Street (Glasgow live)

A Mexican taqueria opening in the city centre has our name written all over it - bring on the worm! This spot is rumoured to be run by the same people behind the Rotunda restaurants and the likes of Halloumi and Pickled Ginger - so you know it’s going to be good. Mezcal’s Mexican wrestler frontage is already calling out to us - and we can’t wait to sample those tacos when the doors finally open on Hope Street.

Buck’s Bar

More chicken? Don’t mind if we do! Glasgow’s favourite wing spot is obviously doing a roaring (or should that be clucking?) trade - so much so that they’re opening a second location at the Trongate. ‘Chicken, Liquor, Rock ’n’ Roll’ is the slogan and we can never have too much of any of it in our lives. Even if they do pair fried chicken with ice cream from time to time … jury’s out on that one.

Meze Meze

Meze Meze is hoping to open up in 1032 Argyle Street (Google Maps/Meze Meze)

Middle eastern food is having a bit of a moment in Glasgow, so news that there’s a new Turkish restaurant coming soon to Finnieston has our attention. Meze Meze’s sign went up earlier this month at the spot previously occupied by The Kitchen, at 1032 Argyle Street. Authentic Turkish and Persian food is the promise - and we can’t wait to see if they deliver.

Sugo

(Paesano Instagram)

Where have you been all our lives, Sugo? The stuff of pasta dreams is coming your way soon - and if sister restaurant Paesano (city centre and west end branches) are anything to go by then we’re all in for a tasty Italian treat. Glasgow’s favourite pizza spot (seriously, what do they put in that dough to make us all go mental for it?) has confirmed that Sugo, a restaurant dedicated to authentic, freshly made pasta, will open in an iconic Mitchell Street building. No opening date as yet - but we’re first in line for this one, Glasgow!
