Now that we’ve ranked the Top 10 Day two picks for the Raiders over the past ten years, it’s only fair to list off the ten worst.
The Raiders had a total of 22 players selected in rounds two and three over the past ten years. Which means when ranking the top ten and the bottom ten, two players won’t be listed. Those two players are last year’s third round picks, Byron Young and Tre Tucker, which only seems fair considering we haven’t seen enough from them to say which list they might fit on.
The bottom ten list will start at the 13th ranked player drafted on Day two and go to the 22nd and worst. If you’re into catharsis or just like to appreciate the good picks, then enjoy the list of the ten worst Raiders Day two picks of the past ten years.
13. CB Trayvon Mullen, 2019, Pick 40
Mullen was one of five Clemson players the Raiders selected over a two-year span. Only one of them panned out for the Raiders (Hunter Renfrow) and Mullen wasn’t nearly the worst of them.
Probably the worst thing about Mullen’s selection, before you even get into his actual career, was who they passed on to draft him — namely receivers AJ Brown and DK Metcalf.
Mullen was traded after his third season while Brown and Metcalf have been elite pass catchers, with each making multiple Pro Bowls.
14. WR Bryan Edwards, 2020, Pick 81
Edwards was lauded as a great pick at 81 overall in this draft. I loved the pick myself. He carried high hopes that never panned out. He lasted two seasons with the Raiders and a total of three seasons in the NFL. He is out of the league now.
15. TE Clive Walford, 2015, Pick 68
Two decent seasons with the Raiders to start his career and fizzled out after. He lasted five seasons in the NFL.
16. T Brandon Parker, 2018, Pick 65
I don’t care how long his career was. The Raiders actually traded up to grab this small school guy. And every season he would either make the team or be brought back brought more mystery as to how and why. It appears the Raiders have finally let him go. But at this point I won’t believe it until like two years from now.
17. NT Eddie Vanderdoes, 2017, Pick 88
A former highly regarded high school recruit who let his weight get out of hand. The Raiders took a chance on him and in practice one-on-ones he looked great. But when the games were actually played, you realized he was just trying to overpower his guy all the time, with no real technique or awareness of where the ball carrier was. He lasted one season for the Raiders appeared in just three games for the Texans after that.
18. DI PJ Hall, 2018, Pick 57
An short but stocky small school guy the Raiders drafted way higher than he was projected. And they seemed to know it considering they traded down before picking him. He lasted two seasons with the Raiders and three total NFL seasons.
19. EDGE Shiliique Calhoun, 2016, Pick 75
Calhoun put up some great numbers in college. And was considered a bit of a surprise that he was available in the third round. Then it became obvious why. He just didn’t have that fire. He put up a total of a half sack and 29 tackles over three seasons with the Raiders. He spent five seasons in the NFL.
20. S Obi Melifonwu, 2017, Pick 56
A very highly touted safety. He was just soft. There’s no other way to say it. He lasted a total of seven games in the NFL. Raiders career stats: 5 games, 4 trips to injured reserve. Hard to imagine a more disappointing player than him.
21. LB Tanner Muse, 2020, Pick 100
This one dumbfounded everyone. And after Mike Mayock’s explanation, it was even worse. His only argument in favor of making this pick at the end of the third round was that Muse could play special teams. A special teamer. A position teams don’t usually start thinking about until the sixth round. And they took him in the third round. He never played a game for the Raiders. Not even on special teams.
22. RB Lynn Bowden Jr, 2020, Pick 80
An athlete who was unproven as a running back. And yet the Raiders drafted him as one. Then somehow realized maybe they should have done some actual homework on a pick they made atop the third round, trading him to the Dolphins before he’d ever played a snap.
