10 supermarket proseccos judged in blind taste test - and winner costs just £8.99

With Christmas on the horizon, many of us might be thinking about getting in a few bottles of bubbly to celebrate.

While we do all love a good bottle of champagne, but it can be rather costly. That's why a bottle of prosecco or sparkling wine is usually a better alternative.

Before you go heading out to pick up the first bottle you see, it can be handy to know where you can buy a cheap option that doesn't compromise on quality.

Luckily, Which? had a panel of wine experts blind taste a range of sparkling wines from major supermarket chains and found that one of the best bottles would set you back just £9.

Testing 10 supermarket bottles of sparkling wine, the panel found that there were two supermarkets that tied for the top spot - Aldi and The Co-Op.

Aldi's Specially Selected Crémant du Jura won the Best Buy endorsement from Which? (Aldi)

Aldi’s Specially Selected Crémant Du Jura was awarded the Which? Best Buy endorsement and was also one of the cheapest bottles that was tested.

Priced at just £8.99, the 2018 vintage was commended by the panel for its crisp and refreshing taste, hints of green-apple, guava and grapefruit and its smooth, creamy finish.

If you are looking for a champagne alternative, then The Co-op's Irresistible Prosecco, which also tied for first place, is described as a "similar tasting drink for less."

Priced at just £9, the bubbly was commended as a "crowd pleaser" by the panel who enjoyed its zesty aroma and notes of ripe peach, pear and jasmine.

The Which? panel was made up of leading wine experts who were asked to test 10 supermarket bought sparkling wines that were priced at anywhere between £5 - £15.

After the wines had been tasted, the panel then talked through each bottles notes and agreed on an overall score for each bottle and decided which deserved the coveted "Best Buy" awards.
