10 River of Light artworks that will light up the city this week

There's just a few days to go until Liverpool's waterfront is illuminated with beautiful artwork as the River of Light gallery makes a welcome return.

For 17 nights from Friday, October 21 to Sunday, November 6, the free exhibition will feature artworks created by local, national and international artists. All of the artwork will follow the theme of Unexpected Twist - offering a nod to the World Gymnastics Championships, which will be taking place in the city at the same time.

The walking trail spans 2km and will include brand-new, world premiere pieces alongside existing artworks which have never been displayed in the city before. River of Light will be delivered by Liverpool City Council's Culture Liverpool team and is supported by Arts Council England.

Councillor Harry Doyle, cabinet member for culture and and visitor economy, said: "We know River of Light is one of the most popular events we organise and we love to see people walking the trail and seeing our city centre spaces in a new light courtesy of the imagination of some incredible artists.

"As always, the calibre of the artists that we are working with this year is incredibly impressive. We are now attracting critically acclaimed creatives who have never worked in light art form, but are wowed by what we produce as part of this festival and want to be a part of that.

"It's great to see the education element of this year's event coming to the fore as well - we want to make art as accessible as possible for all, and I'm delighted that so many of this year's River of Light artists are giving up their time to share their experience and expertise. It's going to be a bumper few weeks for Liverpool with so many major events taking place in the city - it's the place to be this autumn!"

Full list of the River of Light artworks

Turn The Light On, It's Dark In Here - Influential and critically acclaimed French street artist Camille Wahala will work in light for the first time in her career. Expect a colourful, dynamic piece which creates an abstract cityscape of light.

Dancing Ribbons - This artwork is a first for British-Nigerian artist Yinka Ilori, who has been inspired by rhythmic gymnastics. His installation aims to capture the energy between the gymnast and the prop ribbon and includes a specially-created soundscape called Rhapsody of Light, created by composer and producer Peter Adjaye.

Light Looper - This interactive installation is the brainchild of Liverpool's very own Kazimier Productions. The exhibit is a multiplayer game where players send particles of lights all around the artwork, building up speed until the piece allows them to send the fully charged particle to the very top.

Rainbow Accordion - Inspired by a traditional accordion, this artwork consists of six giant colourful, interconnected archways, which sit on an interactive pad that sends light and sound through the archway when it is jumped on. This work has been created by Australian artists Amigo & Amigo, who are appearing at the River of Light festival for the second time.

BEAM - This artwork is a brand new commission by the acclaimed Lucid Creates (artists Helen Swan and Chris Carr). It will see a beam of light transport visitors to a hot summer's day, accompanied by the sounds of the British countryside. However, after several minutes, the feeling of peace and warmth will change to unease and suspense.

Evanescent - Created by Atelier Sisu, Evanescent is an immersive light and sound environment. The work explores the fragility and temporary nature of the world around us.

Electric Dandelions - The Electric Dandelions are giant steel and acrylic sculptures that represent a dandelion flower during the day and come to life at night as an endless firework display. The artwork is created by Abram Santa Cruz/Liquid PXL.

Kinetic Perspective - Inspired by the optical art illusions of the 1960s, artist Juan A. Fuentes Munoz creates an abstract, immersive geometric shape. A row of 18 illusions, each composed of two circles spinning in sync, gives the impression of a vanishing point at the eye level of visitors.

Affinity - Created by Amigo & Amigo, this interactive light and sound installation is inspired by the human brain. The artwork features 62 different colour combinations and 45 points of interactivity.

Continuum - Continuum is a brand new installation from Illumaphonium. The interactive 20 metre artwork is made of 25 mirrored monoliths creating a maze of infinite reflections.
