10 Premier League talking points as Liverpool dream and Arsenal keep pressure on Man Utd

The Premier League season is entering a tantalising climax after another weekend fuelled by high-octane drama.

Tottenham Hotspur blew the title race wide open as Harry Kane's brilliance inspired a stunning victory over Manchester City at the Etihad.

Liverpool got the job done against Norwich and are now within touching distance of Pep Guardiola's champions.

Meanwhile, the race for the top four is also heating up after victories for Arsenal, Manchester United and Wolves.

Relegation-threatened Watford and Burnley also secured wins that could alter the course of their season.

Here are Mirror Football's ten talking points from this weekend's action.

Title race blown open

HAVE YOUR SAY! Who will win the Premier League title? Comment below

It would perhaps have been too abrupt to suggest City were already cruising to a fourth title in five years before Spurs, and namely Harry Kane, rolled into town.

But such was their indomitable excellence, even the slightest of blips seemed inconceivable.

One defeat, however, and the title race has been blown wide open.

City dominated Conte's men for large periods but couldn't take advantage, and are now looking over their shoulder towards Merseyside.

The Kane show

This really was the case of 'here's what you could have won' for City and Kane had a point to prove.

This was not the Harry Kane of this season but rather the player Etihad chiefs were prepared to pay a nine-figure sum for in the summer to take them to European glory.

Of course, obstinate Spurs supremo Daniel Levy stayed stubborn and Kane stayed put in North London after four attempts from Guardiola to turn him Sky Blue.

Kane's majesty in Manchester could finally kickstart his season and Antonio Conte's Spurs have a real chance of fourth spot with their talisman back firing.

Liverpool on the march

A dream weekend for Jurgen Klopp and a dream weekend for Anfield's new Colombian hero.

The Reds secured a gutsy win over Norwich and Luis Diaz opened his account against the relegation-battling Canaries.

Diaz is now just the 149 goals behind the mercurial Mohamed Salah, who scored his 150th goal for the Reds in style.

Klopp's men are on a calvary charge, now just six points behind City with a game in hand.

Sancho coming good

Jadon Sancho was the contrast of calm and composure in the blood and thunder of a madcap afternoon at deluged Elland Road.

Despite not scoring, the 21-year-old was United's most prominent conductor in the cacophony of chaos as Ralf Rangnick's men piled more pressure on Leeds.

The Red Devils return to West Yorkshire was a true throwback with six goals, defensive disasters and devastating attacking play on a rain-sodden surface.

And the impressive Sancho is finally hitting form at just the right time for United.

Top four race heats up

West Ham may remain fifth but this was a disastrous weekend for the Hammers in pursuit of Champions League qualification.

David Moyes' men watched a series of unfortunate events after being held by Newcastle.

Arsenal, Wolves, United and Tottenham all secured important victories as the top four race continued to heat up.

The Gunners edged past Brentford, while Wolves piled more misery on Leicester and Brendan Rodgers.

Lost Lukaku

Chelsea returned from Abu Dhabi having won the lot under the ownership of Roman Abramovich.

But the Russian billionaire's investment in the return of Romelu Lukaku has already become a £97m problem.

Hakim Ziyech's late winner secured victory at Crystal Palace but Lukaku's impact was the subplot in his own tragicomedy.

The Belgian mustered just six touches from open play (another came from kick off) in a no show that broke records for the least number of involvement for a player completing a full match in top flight history.

Boss Thomas Tuchel must find a solution to Lukaku's malaise.

Leicester in freefall

Leicester have hit more than a bump in the road under Brendan Rodgers.

The Foxes are in freefall after a latest defeat at Europe-chasing Wolves left them just nine points clear of the relegation zone.

Rodgers' side are still without a league win in 2022 and the Northern Irishman, who had been tipped for the Old Trafford hot seat, is suddenly fighting for his job in the East Midlands.

Defensive horror-shows and injury nightmares have induced the FA Cup winners' plight.

Brilliant Burnley

Tottenham's dramatic victory at the Etihad was the biggest shock result of the weekend.

But few could have predicted a resounding 3-0 victory for Burnley over Graham Potter's men, who sit comfortably in the top half of the table.

New striker Wout Weghorst netted in the comfortable win and the January signing is central to Sean Dyche's survival hopes at Turf Moor.

Relegation dogfight

Roy Hodgson's first win as Watford boss at Villa Park could hardly have come at a more important time.

This was a game Hodgson's Hornets simply had to win and the header from Emmanuel Dennis gives the club's third manager of the season hope.

Hodgson eulogised about Steven Gerrard's managerial credentials before the match but his former Liverpool player is now on his worst run as a coach, with one win in eight games.

Everton in trouble

If Frank Lampard didn't realise the full scale of the task at Everton before he arrived on Merseyside, he definitely will now.

Another below-par display on the road ended in a convincing defeat to Southampton.

The Toffees are frighteningly close to the drop zone and things don't get any easier with wounded Manchester City next to come in the league.

Lampard cannot just rely on performances at Goodison Park to avoid survival.
