'10 out of 10' - Arsene Wenger names Liverpool 'unsung heroes' after Benfica win

Arsene Wenger has praised the recruitment carried out by Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp, saying he would give "10 out of 10 to the scouts."

The iconic former Arsenal manager was speaking after the Reds earned a comfortable 3-1 win over Benfica in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. Ibrahima Konate, Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz were on the scoresheet in Lisbon to put Klopp's side on the brink of the last four.

Liverpool are also in contention for Premier League and FA Cup glory this season having already won the Carabao Cup. The team's ability to compete on all fronts is founded in the squad depth, which has been expertly assembled by manager Klopp and the club's recruitment team. Konate and Diaz were both new signings this season and played crucial goalscoring roles on Tuesday.

Speaking to beIN Sports, Wenger shared his admiration for the business done by the club and suggested Diaz was going to be another big transfer hit.

"I would give 10 out of 10 to the scouts," said the Frenchman. "Nothing was wrong there, from [Mohamed] Salah and Mane to [Virgl] Van Dijk. Now Diaz - Diaz looks special. Unbelievable what they’ve done.

"The only guy who didn’t integrate as well as we expected from the start on was Thiago, a little bit [Naby] Keita. It took them some time to adjust to the Premier League pace. They’ve done extremely well, Liverpool."

Diaz has added a new dimension to the Reds' attack and has provided Klopp with crucial depth in the forward line. Meanwhile, Konate has proven to be an effective partner for Van Dijk, turning in particularly impressive displays in the Champions League.
