The best trampolines for family fun in the garden

best trampolines for family fun in the garden 2021
best trampolines for family fun in the garden 2021

These days it's all about the in-ground trampoline.

Embedded into the ground, they’re a cunning option for smaller gardens, since they meet European safety standards with no need for the unsightly, shadow-casting safety nets of above-ground trampolines.

Unobtrusive and partially hidden in the floor, in-ground trampolines offer a sense of frolicking and freedom, as they lack an inhibiting enclosure. That said, they do require some minor DIY excavation (they must be set in grass, never concrete or decking, and sit on flat level ground).

Although it's not a necessity, some parents will still find comfort in the added safety of surrounding cushioning, and there are a number of fantastic above-ground trampolines on the market too.

According to Tim Sidebotham of outdoor leisure and play equipment e-tailer All Round Fun, size also matters when it comes to selecting the right trampoline for you and your family – since the larger the surface area of the trampoline, the higher the bounce.

Safety guidelines issued by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents state that trampolining isn't suitable for children under the age of six, since they’re unable to control their bouncing. While there are a number of products on the market designed especially for toddler play and development (we recommend the junior toddler trampoline with easy grip handle, £47.99, Mothercare), parents of very young children are urged to steer clear of typical garden trampolines over 6ft.

All things considered, here is your guide to the best trampolines you can buy at the moment:

1. Sportspower Easi-Store 12ft 'Slama Jama' trampoline with ladder and cover

The trampoline is zinc-coated (galvanised) and boasts strength tested springs with a durable jump mat to provide a smooth and consistent bounce experience.

If safety is still a concern for you, we recommend that you research Springfree Trampolines, who claim to have changed the way trampolines work by patenting a design without springs; they say they have eliminated the impact areas that cause 90pc of all product-related trampolines injuries. With a jumping surface of 8 x 13ft oval trampoline, this model equivalent to that of a 10 x 15ft oval trampoline with springs. As a result, it allows you to maximize your jumping surface while saving valuable garden space. You can buy it with interest free credit, if you balk at the cost.

Our conclusion

Whether you opt for an in-ground or an above ground trampoline, the best brands to look out for include Evostar (a budget option that doesn't compromise on safety and quality), Plum (mid-range), and premium brands Jumpking and BERG. Easi-Store trampolines are particularly handy if you might need to move house or store your trampoline away at any point.

Trampolines are a great way to get an aerobic, cardiovascular work out without putting the same pressure on the joints as running. The Telegraph's fashion director Lisa Armstrong swears by her rebounder, while a garden trampoline is undoubtedly a great way to get kids to burn off their energy, get outside and get moving. However, for children under the age of six, standard garden trampolines are not a suitable toy - so look out for low, extra padded models designed specifically for toddlers with a handle, for use indoors or outdoors.

If you're looking for something a little extra, the Easi-Store 12ft 'Slama Jama' trampoline even has a basket ball hoop for double the fun (£289.99, very.co.uk). Sidebotham also recommends you buy a weather cover to protect from your trampoline from the elements, and opt in for accessories such as shoe bags and ladders to make the trampoline more accessible. Some trampolines come together with accessories as a pack which can save money, but with other brands you need to purchase these separately.
