10 of the best fish and chips shops in Nottingham according to Tripadvisor

It's the classic British cuisine. No matter what you go for almost everybody loves heading into their local fish and chips shop once or twice (or thrice) a month and digging into whatever they fancy.

But what makes the perfect serving of the great British takeaway? The chips have to be golden on the outside, light and fluffy inside; the fish needs to be white, flaky and succulent with light and crisp batter - all with a sprinkling of salt and vinegar.

And with the price of fish and chips creeping up over the years, friendly service goes a long way, too. So, no matter what you tend to get when you go to your chippy, the 10 stores below will get it right for you.

The Cods Scallops

Haddock and chips at The Cod's Scallops (Becky Jones)

If you have to have your chips cooked in beef dripping go on a Monday. Otherwise the rest of the week they're cooked in the healthier alternative of vegetable oil.

One of the widest choices of fish and shellfish at a takeaway without a doubt - from seabass and monkfish to cockles, lobster and sashimi-grade yellowfin tuna.

And they've just introduced soft whipped ice cream cones - what's not to love?

Reviewers say:

"Lovely staff, always pleasant and helpful and greet you with a smile when you walk in, great food with a very wide selection too. We go most weeks now."

Great food, super quick service - chips were cooked really nicely as was the battered sausage I had, we also ordered the battered halloumi which was light and crispy, couldn’t have asked for better

Oakdale Chippy

Some things never change - last year the chippy ranked in first place and continues to top the table in 2022 thanks to its loyal customers. Believe it or not, this place is ranked number one out of 907 restaurants on Nottingham's TripAdvisor.

Fans praise the quality of food, friendly service and value for money with a large cod and chips setting you back £6.40 and a mini portion £5.30.

Chips are fried in rapeseed oil and portions are big.

If you've got a family of five to feed the chippy's 15in pizza box packed with doner and chicken meat, chicken strips, hot wings, onion rings, popcorn chicken, chips, salad and two sauces is a real treat for £25.29.

Reviewers say:

"Absolutely the best chippy. Amazing staff; so friendly and helpful. Food tastes amazing and is well worth the money. Excellent!!"

"Chippy chips to die for. Amazing. Very good quality fish and chips. Really enjoyed our grub. Cooked to perfection is just right. Not too expensive either."

Location: 106 Oakdale Road, Nottingham NG3 7EH

Sea & Earth looks at delivering the freshest quality food, for all your chippy needs - and comes with specially developed vegan options. Its owner has grown up in a family of three generations with experience in the industry and multiple awards over the years.

With traditional cod for £9.25, smoked bacon bean balls and banana blossom fish, this store has something for everyone.

Reviewers say:

"Went purposely to try the banana blossom "fish" and I was not disappointed, it was delicious."

Andy's Fish Bar

Andy's Fish Bar (DERBYSHIRE LIVE OR NAME OF WEBSITE LOCATION)

Going strong in its 27th year, the chippy serves top-quality chips at affordable prices from £1.90 to £3.30, while cod and chips is £5.90. Now in its third generation, Andy and Helen Kavalieros run the chippy in Bilborough. It was Helen's grandfather who originally started the business in Alvaston, near Derby.

To this day the gravy is still made from a secret recipe dating back to 1952. Chip mixes don't just come with gravy or curry sauce - there's homemade chicken curry, too.

Serving a gluten-free menu on Monday and Thursday teatimes makes many coeliacs very happy.

Reviewers say:

"It's very nice, clean and the staff are very welcoming. The food is very and generally cooked very fresh. Worth waiting for."

Cod Fish And Chips

If you want a classic fish and chips shop this is the place to go. The venue describes itself as "an unpretentious fish and chips shop."

Cod Fish and Chips is a family-run traditional fish and chip shop based in the heart of Nottingham city centre. The store will provide customers with a reasonably priced yet at the same time high-quality food range.

Reviewers say:

"Went today, our first time, it was lovely & on proper plates, with a knife & fork. 2 good size fish, chips one with mushy peas, & one with curry sauce. For £7 fantastic value. Definitely call again when visiting Nottm."

Location: 8-10 St James's St, Nottingham NG1 6FG

Mother Hubbard's

The First Mother Hubbard's fish & chips restaurant on Ingleby Road, Bradford, was completed in 1972 - and opened by Coronation Street stars Stan and Hilda Ogden. A touch more expensive than your usual chippy, Mother Hubbard's provides a wonderful dine-in area to go with its delicious grub.

The store only uses the finest Icelandic haddock and British potatoes to produce the crispiest battered fresh fish and golden chips.

Reviewers say:

"Visited here on a Sunday had fish bites chips and mushy peas (child's portion) which for me was more than enough with batter bits and I must say this has been the best chippy I have had in a very long time."

Location: Unit 5, Beechdale Retail Park, Nottingham NG8 3LL

Moulin Rouge

This Nottingham institution couldn't be more different from the chic French cabaret with the same name. The Parisian home of the can-can might put on spectacular shows but then again they don't serve a tray of haddock and chips with mushy peas.

A presence in the city centre for 40-odd years, it must be doing something right.

Reviewers say:

"Absolutely delicious food, freshly made to order. One of the best fish and chip shops in the city centre. Very clean and very friendly staff. Excellent value for money. Shame they don't open Sunday evenings."

Location : Trinity Square, Nottingham NG1 4AF

Wollaton Fish Bar

The family-run business has been going strong since 1993 and its legion of fans say the batter is light and crispy and the chips are plentiful. If you're visiting this one remember to take cash as it doesn't accept card payments.

Reviewers say:

"If you want fresh fish, lovely chips, great chicken, kebabs, big portions and service with a smile this is the place for you. Not the cheapest but it’s always busy, which has to be a good sign. We’ve been using them for years and the food is always bang on. You won’t be disappointed."

Location: 5 Russell Drive, Wollaton NG8 2BA

Carringtons

This classic chippy has a 4.5 rating on TripAdvisor and has everything you need from your fish and chips shop. Their thick-cut chips, in particular, are what everyone goes crazy over.

So if that's your thing, be sure to check it out!

Reviewers say:

"After a day's cricket at Trent Bridge, I walked into town and got a bag of chips from my favourite chippy before my train home. I hadn't been to the centre of Nottingham for eighteen months because of the pandemic but the quality of the chips was as high as ever. The chip shop's near the station so if anyone's waiting for a train and hungry I can recommend Carringtons without hesitation."

Location: 89 Carrington Street, Nottingham NG1 7FE

Sea Fish

Known for its fish ’n’ chips, this straightforward takeaway shop also serves kebabs and burgers. Sea Fish is renowned in the area not only for its quality but also its presentation of freshly-cooked food.

With the high prices of fish and chips now becoming a hotly-debated topic, Sea Fish does deals and specials all for less than £9.

Reviewers say:

"Not my regular chippy, but I've bought fish and chips fom Sea Fish several times now in the last few months and the quality has always been excellent. Friendly service too. Would definitely recommend."
